The American Psychiatric Association (APA) Board of Trustees apologizes to its members, patients, their families, and the public for enabling discriminatory and prejudicial actions within the APA and racist practices in psychiatric treatment for Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC). The APA is committed to identifying, understanding, and rectifying our past injustices, as well as developing anti-racist policies that promote equity in mental health for all.

That's what we do in Beat the Odds - Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT) "These results suggest that psychosocial interventions particularly CBT and multiple or combined psychotherapeutic modalities may play an important role in improving immune-related health outcomes. Such interventions may not only be effective, they may also prove to be affordable alternatives to current therapeutic options. The mean length of a CBT intervention in the meta-analysis was 10.4 weeks, which... the investigators equated with a total cost of $1,560 per patient. By comparison, the cost of using infliximab to reduce inflammation in persons with an autoimmune disorder is approximately $25,000 per patient per year, they wrote. The results suggest the possibility that psychotherapy may be helpful for reducing inflammation and improving immune-related health in certain circumstances, Dr. Slavich concluded. However, the studies that we examined differed in terms of their quality, and we did not examine health outcomes in the present investigation. Therefore, more research needs to be done to determine how the present findings might be translated into treatment options or public policy. https://www.mdedge.com//cognitive-behavioral-therapy-stand

Cervical Cancer Awareness Month continues! Did you know that cervical cancer is the only cancer that has a vaccine? There are 3 licensed HPV vaccines made throu...gh virus-like particle technology using a cDNA for the L1 gene that encodes the outer viral capsid shell. Although fears of the vaccine indirectly promoting sexual promiscuity among teen-agers and virtually no help by pediatricians resulted in very poor vaccine uptake in the U.S. for the first 12 years following initial FDA approval in 2006. Meanwhile Australia has done a great job! However, in 2019 it was reported that there had been some improvement in the U.S. with 51.1% of teens being fully vaccinated in 2018 compared to 48.6% in 2017. Girls continue to be vaccinated at a higher rate than boys. In 2018 the FDA approved a 2-dose schedule for girls and boys ages 9-14. Notes: The history of vaccination is fascinating! In the 20th Century alone, smallpox killed, crippled, mutilated, and/or disfigured 25% of humanity! One thousand years ago the Chinese practiced Variolation by inhalation of mild cases of smallpox inoculates. Next the English farmer Benjamin Jesty (1736-1816) observed that people infected with cowpox experienced mild symptoms and were subsequently protected against smallpox! Jesty decided to infect his wife Elizabeth and two eldest sons with cowpox to give them immunity to smallpox. He used a darning needle to transfer pustular material from a cow by scratching the arms of the family member recipients - the boys had mild local reactions but Elizabeth’s arm became very inflamed- all recovered. Even though the experiment worked Jesty was reviled by his neighbors as being inhuman and hooted at - he never published his results. It was Edward Jenner (1749-1823), the English physician and scientist, who took cowpox material from his milkmaid Sarah Nelmes’ hand blister (she got it from a cow named Blossom) and inoculated his gardener’s son 8-year old James Phipps. He published his results and became known as the Father of Vaccination. In science, credit does not go to the person who thinks of an idea first but to the one who convinces the world! Smallpox has been eradicated! Scroll for pics! See more

"People of color are more likely to be diagnosed with late-stage cancer because of lack of access to proper screenings. For instance, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in Black people, according to the American Cancer Society, and a reported 19 percent of the racial disparities in colorectal cancer deaths can be attributed to lower screening rates." https://www-popsugar-com.cdn.ampproject.org//jodi-ann-/amp
