Ships carried crows and in cases of poor visibility, scouts let one free and charted the bird’s flight to shore. The Mercury Mark 75 was the industry's first six-cylinder outboard engine, and at 60 horsepower, it was the most powerful production outboard ever manufactured up to that time. In, 1957 Carl Kiekhaefer tested the Mark 75 at Lake X. Two Mark 75 engines set an endurance record by running non-stop for over 50,000 miles (80,000 km) over 68 3/4 days on Lake X.
