In-Service For Volunteers And the Community Exploring The Diversity Of End Of Life Rituals And Traditions Part ll... In hospice work we care for a diversity of people who have many different cultural, religious/faith traditions, and spiritualties. A cornerstone of palliative care is respect for the unique dignity of each person. Respect requires understanding another’s perspective and their way of seeing the world. Join us for an evening to continue the discussion of learning where we will explore different cultural/religious traditions related to the death experience, mourning the dead and funerals. Please join us even if you weren’t able to attend Part l. Those who attend can expect to think about their own cultural/religious traditions in the context of the death experience, listen to others as they share their unique cultural/religious traditions and gain exposure to a variety of cultural religious traditions and how they approach death and dying. Thursday, June 30, 2016 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM Presented by Bud Kaicher, Spiritual Counselor at Hospice By The Sea RSVP To Phyllis by Tuesday, June 28 [email protected] or 858-794-0195

Here is one of the many wonderful things our volunteers do for our patients! Each week, a dedicated group of volunteers comes into our offices and creates beautiful flower arrangments in Mason jars. The flowers, donated by Whole Foods in Del Mar and Seaside Market in Cardiff, are then delivered to our patients who receive these beautiful arrangements each week. Thank you very much to Whole Foods, Seaside Market, and our amazing group of volunteers!

November is National Hospice Month! Facts about Hospice: - Every year more than 1.6 million people living with a life-limiting illness receive care from the nation’s hospice and palliative care providers.... - Hospice is paid for by Medicare, Medi-Cal and most insurance plans. - Hospice provides expert medical care as well as spiritual and emotional support to patients and families. - Hospice services anyone with a life-limiting illness, regardless of age or type of illness. - Hospice services people who are living in their home, board and cares, assisted living facilities, skilled nursing homes and memory-loss units. - A person may keep his or her referring physician involved while receiving hospice care. - Research has shown that people receiving hospice care can live longer than similar patients who do not opt for hospice. - Hospice programs offer one year of grief counseling for the surviving family and friends. Please help us spread the word, especially during November, of how valuable hospice care can be when someone reaches that time in his or her life when curative measures can not be taken. DAY OF GIVING On Friday, September 11, eleven people, from the HR department at Callaway Golf Company came to Hospice By The Sea’s office to spend the day volunteering. Each year the HR department picks a company to volunteer for and this year we were the lucky place they selected! They spent the day sewing Prayer Squares for us. These are 2 - 3X3 squares of fabric that are sewn together by hand with a piece of batting inside. Then a decorative thread is sewn in the middle of... the square with 4 tails hanging down. These prayer squares are used by our spiritual counselors. They will bring one to the bedside of our patients when the end of their life is near. Each family member holds the prayer square saying a special prayer or good thought for their loved one while tying a knot with the two decorative threads. The prayer square is then placed on the chest of their loved one for them to absorb all of these good wishes. We had a wonderful day with the HR team from Callaway golf! By the end of the day they collectively had made 208 squares!! Hospice By The Sea was so fortunate to have such a dedicated group of volunteers spent a fun day with them! A big shout out to the HR department at Callaway Golf Company!

Death and Dying: A Candid Discussion Over Coffee _________________... Presented by Hospice By The Sea An Opportunity To Discuss End-Of-Life Issues With A Hospice Doctor And Chaplain 312 S Cedros Avenue, Suite 250 Solana Beach, CA 92075 (858-794-0195 There is an old adage that "we die the way we live". Whether true or not, many tend to think about death only out of necessity. Often advanced planning, discussions of meaningful matters and beliefs are neglected until a time when it becomes more problematic to communicate or plan. Dr. Mark Kalina, M.D. and Chaplain Jodi Varner are dedicated to shedding light on the fears and complicating factors of aging. They have found that a candid discussion of aging and death can lead to greater sense of peace and freedom. An interactive supportive setting is provided to discuss the spectrum of end-of-life issues. There is no cost to attend. Join our next discussion on Wednesday.April 8 at 8:15 - 9:30.
