January 12, 1993 - The Doors were inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame by one of the leaders of the grunge movement, Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam. During hi...s speech, Eddie gushed over the bands’ catalogue, It amazes me to see all of these songs and all of these records were in the period from ‘67 to 1971. Six records. Eddie then joined the band for a moving rendition of Light My Fire. What do you think of this mash-up of two wildly important rock sound revolutions, psychedelic and grunge?

Paul Bigsby died 46 years ago on June 7, 1968. While most guitarists know him because of his wildly popular Bigsby vibrato, most are not aware that Bigsby is wi...dely considered to have crafted the first true solidbody electric guitar. Bigsby was a motorcycle mechanic during the 1940s in Southern California. He became friends with noted country star Merle Travis when the two met at a motorcycle racetrack. Travis discovered that Bigsby was a notorious tinkerer, and asked Paul if he could fix a vibrato tailpiece on a Gibson L-10. Bigsby ended up replacing the vibrato with a better one of his own design. Travis then asked Bigsbyin 1946if he could build an entire electric guitar, complete with pickups that wouldn’t feed back. Using a design from Travis, Paul created what may have been the first solidbody electric guitar. The guitar had a single cutaway and a headstock that featured all the tuning pegs on one side instead of the standard three per side arrangement. This was similar to a design used a century before by German luthier Johann Stauffer. It would later show up later in very similar form on the Fender Stratocaster. Bigsby got requests for other custom-built guitars (notably pedal steels) as well as more vibratos. He wasn’t interested in mass production and did almost everything by himself, including winding the pickups. Demand for his vibrato mechanism soon overwhelmed him to the point where he could not spend time building guitars, so he focused exclusively on the tailpieces. He sold the Bigsby company to Gibson in 1965, and died three years later.
