Thank you LA Job Corps for donating 300 books to benefit our Family Literacy participants! We’re also grateful for all of you who purchased books during the book drive. We all know that children’s brains and bodies are growing rapidly and need adequate nutrition in order to develop properly. But there is also a direct link between hunger/nutrition and academic performance. A child who is hungry or lacking access to nutrition food is not able to focus in class and may act out. They might also miss many school days because they are fatigued or lacking energy. These factors contribute to lower academic achievement which can result in low self-e...steem and lifelong challenges. When LAUSD moved to distance learning and Hope Street opened up our virtual school for students, we also made sure to serve a healthy breakfast, lunch and snack to each student every single day. Todos sabemos que el cerebro y el cuerpo de los niños están creciendo rápidamente y necesitan una nutrición adecuada para desarrollarse adecuadamente. Pero también existe un vínculo directo entre el hambre / nutrición y el rendimiento académico. Un niño que tiene hambre o que no tiene acceso a alimentos nutritivos no puede concentrarse en clase y puede comportarse mal. También pueden perder muchos días escolares porque están fatigados o por falta de energía. Accordion books are made from a continuous folded sheet of paper and were originally used throughout Asia to accommodate scrolls. Our art students became authors and illustrators and made their own accordion storybooks. They painted papers with liquid watercolors and later cut, folded, and glued them together into an accordion book. Inside them, they developed and wrote their own stories.
