After #AlfredOlango was killed, I was able to get our youth together at #HopeRd and allowed them to express how the feel about law enforcement. A lot of the voiced their feelings mistrust and fear and even different encounters they had with the police. One young lady in particular, Treasure Mckinley voiced very strong feelings that moved everyone. The two weeks following that discussion we were able to strategize on how to bridge the wide gap between law enforcement and our c...ommunity. Two things came from that. 1, an Q&A session with questions formulated by the student body at Lincoln High, spearheaded by Treasure, which allowed them to get answers to questions that they wanted to know. They were real questions that brought clarity and a sense of accountability. 2, Adopt-A-Service Officer. Interested students and willing police officers will be able to engage with each other and build a positive relationship in a one on one setting. This will be volunteer time for the officer, of the clock and in plain clothes spending two hours a month with each other. I have to give a huge shout out to Treasure because she took these ideas and ran with it, coordinated it all, and made it happen with the help of some very supportive staff and administrators at Lincoln High. I'm looking forward to how this all plays out and to what God has in store for Treasure in the future.
