James Duncan August 7, 1953 December 21, 2020 James Douglas Duncan (Jim) was born August 7, 1953 in Oakland, California to June and Jim Duncan.... Jim grew up in Pleasanton, California. Throughout his childhood, his family spent their summers at the Russian River. Those long, free summer days on the river were a cherished memory. Jim swam on competitive AAU teams during his school years. He graduated from Amador High School in 1971 and went into construction, following his father’s footsteps. In 1977, Jim married Marna Mattern from Livermore. They lived in Pleasanton with their two sons, Garrett and Chase, and Jim built his family a beautiful home in Pleasanton. When Jim retired at age 50 after 32 years in the Carpenter’s Union, he and his family moved to Grass Valley where they bought 15 acres, and Jim built another beautiful home for his family. Jim loved many things. He loved dancing and volunteering with his wife, Marna, at Naggiar winery. He loved his family. He loved being outdoors. He was an accomplished skier. He hunted both out-of-state and at the hunting cabin he and his brother built on family property in Monterey County, sharing it with his boys, his great friend Louie Santillanes, and many others. In his retirement, Jim helped family and friends with his building skills. He spent countless hours in his shop. One project he came back to time and time again was to make wooden hearts. He was generous in gifting these special hearts to family, friends, sometimes giving them anonymously to make someone’s day. Jim passed away on December 21, 2020. He was 67. His family thought it fitting that Jim passed away on the Winter Solstice and on the day that the Christmas Star appeared in the sky. He is survived by Marna Duncan, his wife of 43 years, and his son Garrett Duncan, daughter-in-law Cameron, son Chase Duncan, daughter-in-law Susan, and four grandchildren, Sage, Jade, Lyla and Callen who brought him great joy. Jim is also survived by his siblings, Diane Wardin of Pleasanton, California, Susie Jones of Miwuk, California, and Scott Duncan of Rocklin, California and many nieces and nephews. When remembering Jim, many call him a gentle giant and remember his laughter. A celebration of life will be held at the family home in Grass Valley at a later date. Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of the Foothills or any charity of your choice. Arrangements are under the care of Hooper & Weaver Mortuary, Nevada City, CA

Doris Schaffarzick August 28, 1924 December 2, 2020 Doris (Syverson) Schaffarzick was born in Menlo Park, CA, on August 28, 1924, to Carl Andrew Syverson and Ruth {Baker) Syverson. Doris passed away peacefully in her home on December 2, 2020. She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph (Schaff) W. Schaffarzick, her son, Jon Schaffarzick, and her parents. Mom and Dad met delivering a baby when she was in nurses training and he in medical school at Stanford Hospital in San Francisco. All five of their children were born in the same delivery suite where they met. They were married in the Stanford Chapel on September 7, 1945, and shared 66 years. Mom was alert until her last moments. We were able to spend several days with her while she was on hospice. We laughed and cried together as we listened to her recount her favorite memories from her childhood through the present. Until Mom and Dad retired to Lake of the Pines in Nevada County, she had lived her whole life on the San Francisco Peninsula. She enjoyed describing San Mateo County as it was when she was growing up, and we learned about her extended family, with whom she was very close. Mom and Dad were members of The Church of the Ascension Episcopal Church and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, both in Burlingame. Upon retiring, they were very active at Trinity Episcopal Church in Nevada City. They truly loved their church family. They were also active in the schools, especially Cottage Hill, Magnolia, and Bear River, and many community organizations. Doris is survived by her children David Schaffarzick, of Nevada City; Carol Wilson of Lake of the Pines; Kristin Stanberry, of San Carlos; and Lynn Smith, of Laguna Niguel. She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Nicole Wilson, Roger (Tiffany) Wilson, Kimberly (Eric) King, Travis (Coni) Schaffarzick, Denver (Cindy) Schaffarzick, Alison (Skyler) May, Stacie (Brett) Middlekauff, and Jon Stanberry; thirteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. The family was blessed to celebrate her life with her in the days prior to her death. Due to the pandemic, no public services will be held. The family requests donations to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 201 Nevada Street, Nevada City, CA 95959, Attention: Reverend Bradley Helmuth Arrangements were made by Hooper and Weaver in Nevada City.

Charles Herbert Maddox, 81, was born to Thomas and Beulah Maddox on November 27, 1938 in Filoma, AR. You may have heard of The John Deere Place down Newtown Road in Nevada City, CA. If you have, then you know that Chuck Maddox (known by many as Mr. John Deere) loved his John Deere tractors and collectibles. If you ever stopped in to talk with him, he no doubt would have told you about the tractors and engines scattered throughout the property, a story about one of his m...any trips to Baja and catching trigger fish, or he would have told you about his days of racing and building race cars. He took great pride in growing massive pumpkins and displaying his tractors with lights at Christmas for the neighborhood to enjoy. If you ever asked him How are ya? you would have received the response Hawaii? Let’s go! And he did go a few times as well as toured most of the US in his motor home with his family and friends. Most of all, Chuck was proud of his wife and family. He and Betty met at Oristimba High School, he was a sophomore and she a freshman. They married on Dec. 2nd, 1955 at the ages of 16 and 17 in Patterson, CA. His loving and strong relationship with Betty was outlasted by one other as he remained best friends with Jim Bassett from 1st grade until his final day. Chuck grew up in Newman, CA working on a dairy farm with his family where he cultivated his love for all things John Deere. After moving to Nevada County, Chuck worked for Safeway where he was injured and secured early retirement in 1981. Chuck will be greatly missed and is survived by his wife Betty, daughters Joan Hartung (Gerry), Janet Palmer (Tim) and Judy Wrightson (Wade) and son Charles Maddox Jr. (Connie), 12 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. Lorre Falconi July 22, 1943 September 16, 2020 Lorre died peacefully in her home after battling cancer for many years. She was born Lorretta Jane Pannenen. She lived her early years on her parents’ dude ranch at Geneva on the Lake, Ohio, literally on the shores of Lake Erie. During that time she became an accomplished horse woman and trumpet player. Her lifelong passions were her family, her music and her church.... At Ohio State University she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Musicology and served as librarian for the renowned Buckeye Marching Band. At the University of Illinois, Champaign, she earned a Master’s of Science Degree, also in Musicology. Her Master’s program required that she learn to play every single high school band instrument so that she could teach them all to the band members. Following her graduate studies, she taught music at Department of Defense schools overseas to work off her student loans. She taught in Spain Army, Germany Air Force, and Italy Navy for service members’ school children. On her return home she moved to California, naturally to teach music. There she met fellow trumpet player, William (Bill) Falconi in the Nevada County Concert Band. They were married in 1973. She taught music at Nevada City Elementary, Nevada Union High School, Scotten School, Camptonville and Colfax schools, and the Calvary Bible Church. Lorre and Bill had two children, Celesta who also became a music teacher, and Sean, a United States Army West Point graduate. Lorre’s music specialties were classical music and hymns. Lorre was a long-time member of the Calvary Bible Church. With their daughter and son-in-law Ben, she and Bill spent five weeks on a Christian Ministry in a remote, poverty-stricken part of Uganda in an effort to help. Remarkably, while there one of their grandchildren, Matthew, was born to Celesta and Ben. She was an avid Bible Study student and pursued her studies at Calvary Bible Church, Nevada City’s United Methodist Church and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church to name a few. Whenever facing a challenge, she found wisdom, guidance and solace in the Bible. She committed much of it to memory. An additional passion (and pleasure) was visiting her children and grandchildren in Colorado and Washington DC. She is survived by her husband William (Bill), daughter Celesta (Falconi) Cairns, her husband Ben Cairns and their two sons, Matthew and Jacob of Leadville, Colorado, and Lorre and Bill’s son and daughter in law, Sean and Julie Falconi and their daughter, Elizabeth of Spring, Texas. A small, family graveside service was held at the Pine Grove Cemetery on Red Dog Road in Nevada City.
