I want to take a moment to wish everyone a very blessed and Happy New Year. I am truly thankful for the support I’ve been receiving from not only past clients, but all those I work with at Compass. Cara had been living on the streets on and off for 6 years, struggling with addiction, and along the way had become separated from her son. In October, she chos...e to pursue sobriety and made her way to COTS, where she could get the support she needed to get her life back on track. Since her arrival, Cara has been working hard to pursue her goals and make a better life for herself and her son. Says Stacie Questoni, Shelter Services Assistant Manager: "Cara attends health and recovery meetings daily, she participates in all programs and classes offered at COTS, and she made a commitment to secretary a Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meeting, which was a big step for her. She volunteers in the kitchen and is actively looking for employment and housing so that she can reunite with her son and have him live with her full-time." Cara’s many commitments were made more challenging by her lack of transportation. She often spent hours on County busses to attend mandatory appointments. Fortunately, our amazing community came through in a big way. Sebastopol resident, Judy Johnson, was ready to upgrade her car, and she was looking for a way to pass on her Prius, which still has plenty of life in it. Judy’s mechanic Maria do Ceu, owner of Out West Garage, is a tremendous COTS supporter and connected Judy with COTS’ Director of Programs, Jules Pelican. Jules polled COTS’ case managers to see who would benefit most from this generous gift, and it was determined that Cara would be the recipient. The day came earlier this month for Judy and Cara to meet and Cara to receive her new car. Stacie, who snapped this photo of the moment, said: "Judy could see the enormous gratitude Cara had for this gift. Cara was so overwhelmed she couldn’t stop crying! Cara has already purchased insurance for her car and is motivated to pursue employment and housing opportunities and to reunite with her son. We are so grateful for the generosity of our community. Truly, we could not do what we do without you.
