A call for Filipino Bone Marrow Donors: I need to do something (other than cry and panic). For those who have not been following his story: This is our son, Ale...xander Justin "AJ" De Leon Ison. Our miracle baby. He is now 9 months old. But despite still being so new to the world, he must face a challenge. AJ has leukemia. He has been diagnosed with minimally differentiated acute myelomic leukemia (AML-M0). This is a rare type of leukemia. It is especially rare in infants. His doctors say that for a full cure, it is likely that he will need a bone marrow or stem cell donor. The best donor match would have come from a sibling, but AJ is our only child. And while we have had offers from other family members, finding a type match that way is unlikely. AJ's next best bet is a Matched Unrelated Donor found through the National Marrow Donor Program. But here comes the odds. From bethematch.org: "When it comes to matching human leukocyte antigen (HLA) types, a patient’s ethnic background is important in predicting the likelihood of finding a match. This is because HLA markers used in matching are inherited. Some ethnic groups have more complex tissue types than others. So a person’s best chance of finding a donor may be with someone of the same ethnic background." AJ is mostly, but not entirely, of Filipino descent. For Filipinos, the odds of finding a matched donor through the registry is currently only around 40%. You have the power to increase those odds. Please register to be a donor at bethematch.org COVID-19 has put a pause to any in person donor drives. But you can request for a registration kit to be sent to you. You just have to submit a genetic sample in the form of a cheek swab and send it back in. So many of you have offered your help and prayers, and we are very grateful. We would ask now that you please register to be a donor. Also, please share this plea, especially among the Filipino community. Filipinos are well known for supporting each other, and the more people who register, the more AJ's odds of finding a match increase. It can take some time to find a match, so the sooner you register, the better. You might be the person who helps to save the life of this beautiful baby boy. Who knows? You might be the person to save the life of any one of many other people who are also in need of a bone marrow donor. AJ has just finished his first (induction) round of chemotherapy. We are waiting for his body to recover from the treatment before the next round begins. We have heard that subsequent (consolidation) rounds of chemotherapy only get harder. But AJ has been so strong. He is a fighter. We were happy to see him begin to smile and laugh again. We have missed it so.
