A message from @sid_grauman It ‘twas 98 years ago tonight that I made motion picture history when I opened my first Hollywood Boulevard movie palace on October 18, 1922. The premiere of Doug Fairbanks’ great adventure tale ROBIN HOOD was the first Hollywood movie premiere. Doug, dear Mary Pickford, our great friend Charlie Chaplin and Pola Negri were all in attendance along with our master of ceremonies, director Fred Niblo. When you step inside you’ll notice that the prosce...nium arch is gone, as well as the orchestra pit, but by golly, she still stands! This photo is from 1925 when we premiered THE BIG PARADE. #egyptiantheatre #egyptianrevival #historicarchitecture #hollywoodhistory #historichollywood #historictheatre #egyptiantheatrehollywood #moviepalace #douglasfairbankssr #marypickford #robinhood #silentmovie #silentfilm #1922 #charliechaplin #sidgrauman #historicpreservation See more

Lillian Gish., the First Lady of American Cinema, was born October 14, 1893 in Ohio. When her family moved to New York, she met young Mary Pickford and began making Biograph short films. Lillian and her sister Dorothy, also known as The Gish sisters became well known actresses. Lillian Gish starred for D. W. Griffith in The Birth of a Nation in 1914. She made other pictures that became silent classics such as Way Down East and The Wind. In her lifetime (which fell just short of 100 years) she made over 100 films, including the late career, The Whales of August with Bette Davis. Happy Birthday Lillian!! #lilliangish #thegishsisters #oldhollywood #silentfilm
