Within this historic cemetery there are many headstones engraved with epitaphs memorializing the dead. As you walk by this little stone may catch your eye. Carved on the top is the symbol of a broken rosebud, which represents; renewal of life, loss of a young soul or a child that died too young. From the Tombstone of Joseph Henry, infant son of Henry and Louisa Wolters: Our little Jose,... Son of H. & L. WOLTERS, died Jan. 31, 1868, aged 10 mos. & 19 days. Weeping friends as you pass by As you are now so once was I, As I am now so must you be. Prepare to die and follow me. See more

Charles Egbert DeLong Born in Beckman, Dutchess County, New York on august 13, 1832 to Egbert and Sarah Delong. While Charles was still a young boy, both of his parents died just a few years apart from each other. It seems that Charles and his sister Elizabeth were then made wards of the court living with their maternal grandfather Reid Crandall. Charles learned at a young age that he had to stand up and be a man. Charles had an older brother named James; when Charles was 18...Continue reading

Repaired in March of 2020! Although it is unknown when or how these headstones were damaged, we are delighted to report that four more monuments are now standing upright as they were originally intended, thanks to the great craftsmanship of Ruhkala Monument Co Inc. Due to past Friends for the Preservation of Yuba County History fundraisers and the generous donations from the community these repairs were possible. Here are some before, during and after photos.

This is a short clip from the movie, The Ballad of Billie Blue (1972), the portion that was filmed at the Historic Marysville City Cemetery in 1972. The Ballad of Billie Blue aka Jailbreakin', is a Christian-themed film that stars Jason Ledger, Renny Roker, Ray Danton, and Sherry Bain. Erik Estrada also had a small role in this film. Billie Blue (played by Jason Ledger) is a country singer who has a problem with alcohol, then he is sent to prison for a crime he didn't commit.... While in prison Billie meets a young man named Justin (portrayed by the Erik Estrada). One-night Justin tries to break out and is shot dead. This is where they come to the Marysville Cemetery. This clip starts as a Western Pacific train heads north past the G.A.R. Military Section where the other prisoners have buried Justin’s body, it also pans the Pyre that is in the Chinese Section. As they walk through the cemetery you can see several headstones and monuments in the background, some have been down/damaged since 1972. Our efforts to have more headstones repaired will continue and Friends for the Preservation of Yuba County History’s events that fund these repairs will resume once this pandemic is over. Work is still being accomplished and great things happening at the Historic Marysville City Cemetery. L&L Monuments made and positioned a stunning monument in the Binney Family Plot. They also installed a charming memorial bench in the Babies’ Section. Thank you, Robert Vander Ploeg for all your hard work, dedication and attention to details. Everyone loves the gold train! Rest assured; Social Distancing is being practiced.

MARYSVILLE DAILY HERALD, Marysville, California Vol. VI Sunday Morning July 13, 1854 No. 246 The City Cemetery The Common Council have passed an ordinance provide for the improvement of the City Cemetery. A survey is to be made and a map is to be furnished to the city. The cemetery embraces about eleven acres of land and will be divided into suitable family lots. These lots are to be sold to all who may wish to purchase, and the proceeds are to be paid into the Ci...ty Treasury and to constitute a cemetery fund, which is to be used for fencing, improving and beautifying the grounds, and for no other purpose. The ordinance requires that the returns of the sales of lots shall be made to the City Clerk as often as once a month, and that officer is required to make an accurate registry of such sales in a book to be kept for the purpose, which is to be open for the examination of all. An ordinance has also been passed to provide for keeping a registry of interments in the cemetery, by the provisions of which the City Sexton is required to furnish within one month from its passage a full and complete report of the name and age of all persons interred in the City Cemetery, and the date and number of interments. This is to be furnished the City Clerk, who is required to enter the same in a registry book, and to continue the registry of interments from monthly reports to be made by the City Sexton. This book will be open at all times for public examination. The provisions of these ordinances we regard as eminently proper. It is well to pay a religious repaired to the mortal remains of the departed and to decorate their resting places with memorials of love and affection. It is alike consonant with the customs of civilization and the precepts of Christianity, and there is no surer mark of moral and social refinement. We always feel there is some radical defect in that community whose burial grounds present a dilapidated and forlorn appearance. The city of the dead should be a garden of flowers. See more
