Resharing this post from Hillel International Since the start of the pandemic, there have been nearly 3,800 hate-related incidents against Asian Americans reported the vast majority targeting women. We are outraged and disturbed by the violent murders that took place in Atlanta yesterday, as well as the mounting anti-Asian sentiment on the rise in our country. Hillel International stands with the Asian American & Pacific Islander community, including those in our Jewish com...munities, as we work together to fight racism, bigotry, and hateful violence in the United States and around the world. Our tradition is clear that all human beings are created in B'tzelem Elohim - in the image of God. This means that all humans have infinite value, are infinitely equal, and should be afforded infinite dignity. Hatred against any people, is hatred against the Jewish people, is hatred of God. During this difficult time, though the doors of many of our campus Hillels are closed, the hearts of our students, professionals and community members are open and ready to act. If you are a student seeking support in processing, please reach out to your campus or community Hillel for resources. See more

The Jewish community at SDSU, including Hillel, Chabad, Alpha Epsilon Pi, and Jewish Campus Leaders are deeply saddened by the antisemitic graffiti vandalism on a SDSU residential hall. Acts of hate like this are disgraceful and cowardly; that swastikas vandalized a home of Jewish students is especially reprehensible. This demonstration of hate, bigotry, and intolerance will not be tolerated. We stand in solidarity with our Jewish students and the entire Jewish community and ...will continue to strive for a more inclusive and positive climate for all SDSU students. We join SDSU in denouncing this vile act, and we applaud them for their swift, unequivocal condemnation and commitment to combating antisemitism. https://hillelsd.org//statement-on-antisemitic-graffiti-a/ Hillel of San Diego Executive Director, Karen Parry Head Rabbi of Chabad, Rabbi Chalom Boudjnah President of Alpha Epsilon Pi, Ofek Suchard Jewish Campus Leader, Lee Abed

Thank you @hillelintl for sharing these words. The disturbing, disgraceful and violent attacks on our democratic institutions yesterday threaten core American and Jewish values and undermine the freedom and security we all hold dear. The students and communities we serve have been deeply unsettled by both last night’s assault and by fear of continuing risks to our government’s integrity, stability and security.... Hillel has long acted from a place of Jewish values to promote respectful dialogue and civic engagement, and to counter the voices of extremists that threaten our campuses and communities. We remain committed to pursuing justice for all and teaching and supporting civil discourse through our work across the country and around the world. We know many students in our communities remain scared, perplexed and hurting from yesterday’s events. Local Hillel professionals are here for you. WOW! We are blown away by the power of our Jewish community. You don’t have to miss out on your chance to triple your impact! Please know that every dollar helps another emerging adult connect to Jewish life. Thanks to you, Bri Caplan is serving as a student representative on the Hillel International Student board. This prestigious position, which is held by only 20 students from across the country, gives her the opportunity to enhance her leadership skills, while meeting and interacting with both current and future Jewish leaders from around the world. Less than two hours left to triple your impact through our Triple Tzedek Challenge! #GivingTuesday #GiveHillelSD#donate https://hillelsd.wufoo.com/forms/m3ogi691lybu59/

Hillel of San Diego community, This is a note from a family in the community and we wanted to share it with all of you. As part of my (Adriah Greenstein) Bat Mitzvah project, I wanted to try to do something to honor our dear family friends who lost their sweet, magical daughter and sister, Ziva to childhood AML Leukemia last December at age 7 years old. ... We saw how much hope the thought of a bone marrow transplant brought to Ziva's family, and I want to help add people to the registry of possible donors who might save lives. If you are between the ages of 18 and 35 and in general good health, you are eligible to be screened and join the worldwide registry for patients in need. All it takes to find out if you are a match is a simple swab from the inside of your cheek to possibly become a stem cell or bone marrow donor. We are now hosting a Gift of Life Drive-By Swab Drive in San Elijo Hills (San Marcos) THIS Sunday, October 18th from 11:30-1:30 so that you can participate in person (safely and with social distance). Please email us at [email protected] to pre-register and for location details. If you would like to be involved and either don't want to be a bone marrow/stem cell donor or are not 18-35 years old, check out the Gift of Life Donor Circle Page to make a monetary donation to support patients in need being matched with donors.

We hope you can join us for this informative event on Thursday, Oct. 15 @12pm featuring: Julie Datnow, Marriage & Family Therapist and Hillel of San Diego Board Member, Reina Juarez, Ph.D., Director, Counseling and Psychological Services, UC San Diego, and Rabbi Lisa Goldstein, past Executive Director of Hillel of San Diego, currently a teacher and facilitator of Jewish spirituality and mindfulness. Together, they will bring to light the challenges of parenting (and grandparenting for some) college students as they experience a most unusual year, diving into the mental health challenges, ways in which parents can help, and Hillel's role in serving students during this time.

The board of directors of Hillel of San Diego is delighted to welcome Karen Parry, who has worked in key development and education roles, as Executive Director of Hillel of San Diego. Karen was selected after a national search and competitive selection process from a strong field of Jewish leaders. Karen Parry’s track record of community building and financial resource development, her natural talent and her passion for Jewish life make her an ideal leader, said Todd Kirsc...hen, Hillel of San Diego’s President. Karen is currently Development Director for the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle where she oversees fundraising and marketing strategy. During her three years of leadership, the Federation’s campaign grew 8% in total dollars and 17% in total donors. Previously, she served as Education Director at Temple Adat Shalom in Poway, and she got her start in Jewish youth engagement as the Teen Director, JCC Maccabi Games Delegation Head, and Assistant Camp Jaycee Director at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center. Karen earned a coveted spot in the national Wexner Field Fellowship, a prestigious executive leadership program for emerging leaders in Jewish communal service. She was also named a JCCA Merrin Teen Professionals Fellow and served on URJ's Community of Practice in Congregational Education. Karen was honored as a 2012 Woman of Valor at the San Diego Jewish Arts Festival. Hillel of San Diego represents a homecoming for Karen, who earned her undergraduate degree at UC San Diego, and where she participated in Hillel. She earned a master’s degree in education at NYU. I remember my Hillel experience as a student at UCSD with joy, Parry said. Now more than ever, Hillel is a critical force in ensuring our collective Jewish future. I look forward to leading this remarkable organization and supporting the Jewish journeys of the next generation of college students in San Diego. A native of San Diego, Karen returns to her roots with her family - her toddler daughter, Emily, her husband, T.J., and their beagle, Percy. Friends of Hillel of San Diego are invited to an October virtual gathering in the Sukkah to meet Karen and her family (details forthcoming.) Hillel of San Diego encourages students of all backgrounds to form deep, personal connections to Jewish life, learning and Israel. It operates Hillel at UC San Diego, Hillel at SDSU, and Hillel at University of San Diego.

Our former Jewish Agency Israel Fellow at Hillel at SDSU, Yonatan Yogev, gave an interview (in Hebrew - sorry, no subtitles) about his time serving as an Israeli emissary (shaliach) on campus in San Diego. He talks about what drew him to the shlichut, tips for making the most of it (including how to deal with the challenge of being alone in new country), empowering pro-Israel students to build relationships on campus to overcome antisemitsm and anti-Israel activism, and tabl...ing on campus (which apparently is pronounced tabling in Hebrew). He also talks about the special connection he developed with his predecessor, Gal Winrebe, who became a mentor to him. And now, Yonatan has in turn became a mentor to his successor, Elad Kanfi, who returns to San Diego from Israel next month for his second year at SDSU. One of the most amazing aspects of the Israel Fellow program is that not only do the Fellows make a profound impact on the campuses they serve, but their experience also has a profound impact on the Fellows themselves. In sharing their experience with other Israelis, they help to bridge the divide between American and Israeli Jews. Thanks, Yonatan, for sharing your story! https://www.medabrimshlichut.com/blank/episode/1bf56777/40
