Illegal campfire rings are still ever-increasing in the forest, and yesterday was an example that illustrates our heightened concern. One of our fire prevention... technicians was on patrol and discovered that visitors not only decided to drive onto a decommissioned road on the southwest side of Big Bear Lake which was blocked by logs placed by forest personnel, but then decided to create a ground fire. The prevention tech said the fire was not easy to find, and had he found it any later it could've had bigger consequences. Rock rings like these (aka ground fires), are prohibited because they can start wildland fire events, for example when an improperly doused fire continues to smolder in the duff layer. The fire prevention tech who discovered this fire said he has worked for this Forest for 19 years and has never seen this frequency of illegal campfires here. Many other prevention techs have said the same thing. Thanks to the quick work by our firefighters, this one was put out. As we get into summer and our visitor numbers increase, we continue to grow increasingly concerned with the frequencies of these illegal campfires. Please help us spread the word about ground fires so that we do not end up with another wildfire that threatens communities, visitors and the forest. If you want a campfire, current fire restrictions allow for them in a metal ring provided by the Forest Service at open developed sites, or it must be gas-powered and have a fuel shut off valve.
