Hello All Gakko Families!!! Please help spread the word about our Hikari no Gakko fundraiser, flyer attached below. PacRep Theatre is being very generous in allowing us to use their show, The Wizard of Oz, to help raise funds for Gakko. For the past few years at Gakko, we have been falling short of breaking even and we have to raise fees every summer for our campers. We are really trying to keep the fees low, but it's getting harder and harder to do. This fundraiser has the p...otential to raise us a lot of money, but we have to sell the tickets!! :) Please feel free to share this flyer via email, social media or hand them out to friends/family. Please remind your friends that they MUST purchase the tickets from us and not through PacRep's ticket office. This flyer will also be emailed out to the Gakko families and shared via FB but in the meantime, please feel to share and spread the word. Valerie's contact info is on the flyer to purchase the tickets or for questions. For those of you who aren't familiar with the Forest Theatre in Carmel - it's an outdoor theatre a great stage and beautiful setting and Wizard of Oz will be magical! It's a fun evening - families can bring food and have a picnic, sip some wine and enjoy a great show with their friends. Thanks everyone! Hope you are all enjoying your summer! Hope to see you at the show!

The students layed out their blankets and sleeping bags and had a great night watching the movie! Thank you to all the teens and parents who helped with set up and clean up of the movie night!

It's hard to believe that we are halfway throught Gakko now! Day 5 was an exciting day for all! 4th grade was in the kitchen making Spam Musubi! Yummy! It was an exciting day for all students, busy learing and making a variety of crafts! The highlight of the day was our "Undotaikai", Sports Festival. Thank you to all the teen volunteers for running it all and putting together all the games for the students! A special thank you to teen volunteer, Kaila Uota, who organized the whole event! The students had a blast!

The days of Gakko seem to be whizzing by! Today, the 6th grade class had their field trip to the Japanese American Museum in San Jose! The students had a great time and learned a lot about the Japanese American Internment during World War 2. Afterwards they enjoyed chicken teriyaki bentos and visited a few of the shops in Japantown. 7th grade had a Japanese Calligraphy class taught by Rev. Fujikawa and 5th grade learned to Sumie paint Darumas by Kahori Kuramura. 3rd grade... was in the kitchen making panda rice balls and somen (Japanese cold noodles)! One of the highlights today was in the 4th grade class and a visit by Michael Kanner and making bamboo flutes! At the end of the day, we had a demonstration by Jimmy Eitoku and the Salinas Kendo Club. The students were very attentive and were able to use a "shinai" to hit the kendo students! Some of the Kendo Club students were current and past Gakko students! See more

Every morning we start the day with morning excercises to get us our blood flowing for all things Gakko! Led by the teen volunteers, all the students, teachers, and even some parents are ready to start their day! Today, the 6th grade class was in the kitchen learing to make sushi! The students were able to create their own variation of a California roll. Today's demonstration was given by Annie's daughter, Rachel, author of the book, Rachie Bakes! http://www.blurb.com/b/6...902832-rachie-bakes The 3rd & 4th grade class had their Sumie Art class today taught by Daphnee Parachini, owner of The Roaring Mice Art Studio, in Salinas. http://www.yelp.com/biz/roaring-mice-art-studio-salinas Not only did Daphnee teach Sumie painting but she also taught the history of the Art of Sumie!

Day 1: The first day of Gakko and it was an exciting day for all returning students, seeing old classmates from previous years! Even more exciting for the new Gakko students! It seems like everyone quickly became friends and had a great day! Kinder enjoyed cooking teriyaki hot dogs and making cute little rice balls! 6th grade had their Sumie art class taught by Kahori Kuramura! Ottone Sensei was busy teaching the students their songs for the Open House! The highlight of the day had to be the Aikido demonstration given by our very own 6th grade sensei, Sakamoto Sensei, and his colleague, Stromberg Sensei, from Monterey Aikido.
