October is Fire Safety Month. The theme for the week of October 4th through October 10th is Fire Safety in the Kitchen! Cooking is the leading cause of fire in the home. Remain alert while cooking in the kitchen. Safety Tips * Install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in every bedroom and on every level * Test alarms regularly... * Replace alarms every 10 years * Plan and practice an escape route with all family members * If the alarm goes off, leave the home immediately and call 911 * Have a fire extinguisher on every level, in the kitchen, and garage Home Fire Escape Planning * Draw a map of each level, showing all doors and windows * Identify 2 ways out of each room * Show and practice the escape from each room with all family members *Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can't help * Establish a meeting place outside and away from the home * Practice by pushing the alarm button and exiting the home * Never go back into the house * Call 911 from a cell phone or a neighbor's phone

The Great ShakeOut event will take place on October 17th when millions will participate in the earthquake drill. By now, your ShakeOut plans should be set or if you need help, you can still prepare! Many resources are available on the FEMA or Ready.gov sites. Prepare your home or office for earthquake proofing. Resources on Earthquakes and Tsunami's can be found on: earthquake.usgs.gov and tsunami.gov... Remember to Drop / Cover / Hold On Have a family / commuter plan. Prepare / Plan / Practice to be prepared. In addition, The American Red Cross has applications for smartphones for: Hurricanes, First Aid, Tornado, and Emergency.
