Day 1 of production is always nerve wracking. All of the planning and preparation is now being put in motion. No matter what, it can always feel like you're diving a bit into the unknown. Our first day of production on ALONE was the day we filmed the final scenes of the movie. The most heightened, most emotion...ally charged moments. I had a lot of confidence in both of my actors (more on @thomaswilsonbrown in a future post), and after filming the first scenes with each of them, that confidence was totally affirmed. @stephbarkley dove straight into the pain her character was feeling, completely losing herself in the moment. We all had tears in our eyes on set, we were so moved by her performance. It’s getting to the emotional truth of a scene like this, that is what filmmaking is really all about. These were the moments that reassured me, beyond any doubt, that we were going to make something we would all be proud of. . . Beyond the acting, my gaffer @dutchbaysic, and my lighting team showed so much ingenuity and creativity with how they lit this cave. The scene at this desk, in particular. The @asteraofficial Titan tubes made a really cool background, and then Mark had the idea to key Steph in a really cool way. Using a @litepanels 1x1 Gemini, he created a small booklight by bouncing the light off of the cave wall, and then pushing that bounced light through a roll of 216 diffusion. I LOVE how it looked. . . This was shot on the Blackmagic Ursa Mini Pro G2, with Sigma Cine primes. *LINK TO MY NEW SHORT FILM IN BIO!* One of the advantages of shooting my short film almost entirely in one location is that we were able to devote a lot more time than I’d usually take to refine the lighting for the set. Because I was both director and DP, my gaffer Mark Lopez (@dutchbaysic) and key grip (Hunter Rodgers) were essential. We’ve worked together a lot over the years, and as a result, there’s a lot of trust between us. Because I was bouncing so much between the ac...tors and all of the departments, we needed to be able to communicate with each other quickly and efficiently. This is where that trust really came into play. I’m so grateful for these guys! They also had the help of @dfortin13 and @hunting_drones, and they were incredible. Lighting is so important to me, and these guys always nail it! Setting up all these @litepanels Geminis, hooked up to @lighticians wireless DMX control was one of the most fun setups I’ve ever done.
