Helen Tilley for School Board

I was struck yesterday by the statement of a Fairfield Chamber of Commerce member who explained that his grandson, recently graduated from a District high school, had never been taught by a teacher that "looked like him". This former student's experience has motivated him to pursue a teaching credential, so that he may in turn mentor and inspire students that "look like him" to succeed. The question is whether there will be a job for this teacher in the Fairfield Suisun Uni...fied School District after he earns his credential. The answer must be "Yes." As our learning community explores the uncomfortable legacy left by years of hiring decisions based upon conscious or unconscious "privilege" in deciding which teachers are hired, now is the time to move to correct a system that suppresses talent and student achievement by denying our students teachers that "look like them".
