Heaven & Earth is honoring Transgender Awareness Week! This week we are called to action to educate ourselves and others in our communities about the transgender people we love and advocate for an end to all gender based violence! Tomorrow we will honor Transgender Day of Remembrance to lift up the memory of a beautiful woman, Rita Hester, who’s life was taken by an act violence that is too often repeated. ... As medical care providers we feel a deep commitment to educate ourselves to be able to support all our patients! We know that the social and cultural forms of oppression one faces has significant impacts on health and wellbeing. As healthcare providers it would be remiss to attend only to the individual. Gua sha is a traditional East Asian medical technique. It is often used to treat muscle pain, mastitis, the immune system, and your gorgeous face! This time of year we incorporate gua sha of the neck, shoulders and upper back into many of our treatments to treat or prevent colds, flus and fevers. Gua sha stimulates Wei Qi, the immune system and the circulatory system. ... A study conducted in 2016 on the immune response, demonstrated that Gua Sha increases pro-inflammatory cytokines and decreased immunosuppressive cytokines! You may also find this interesting.... A 2014 study found that gua sha improved the range of movement and reduced pain in people who used computers frequently. In a 2017 study, weightlifters who had gua sha felt that lifting weights took less effort after treatment. And my patients with perimenopause symptoms, such as hot flashes and headaches swear by it!
