Yesterday the coalition did a taste test with the folks over at Tom Waddell’s food pharmacy. Tom Waddell clinic is doing some incredible work. Patients with high blood pressure, hypertension and diabetes are being prescribed healthy food options along with their regular medicines. Since the implementation of the program patients have seen their blood pressure and hypertension rates go down. This is no myth though. For thousands of years people have been eating healthy foods ...and living with minimal diseases. However the pharmaceutical companies don’t want us to know this. They want us to continue to buy pills and get addicted so they can make a profit. What they don’t want you to know is that with a healthy diet and regular exercise you can greatly minimize hospital visits. Food truly is medicine. Wanted to give a special shout out to a wonderful hardworking Food Justice Leader Cheryl Shanks. Cheryl was awarded today at the board of supervisors for her incredible organizing work. Cheryl has been a champion for 24 hour pit stops, organized street closures for safer streets, and has overcome incredible adversity. Thanks for being an incredible role model Cheryl! Daldas Community Market is scheduled to open at the end of February! Owner Bill is pictured here standing where there will be two fresh vegetable coolers and a frozen vegetable freezer. The opening of Daldas community market will dramatically increase Tenderloin resident access to healthy food and thereby increase the standard of living for a community that has never had a grocery store. When people have access to healthy food community health also increases. The third photo shows the location where there will be pre made sandwiches and sliced meat. It’s interesting how in California and the global north farming has become kitch with manicured food stands and glossy photos of happy farms. The truth is that farming is HARD WORK and in the global south it’s the most basic way for people to make a living. As climate change gets worse and worse farmers in the global south are faced with even an even more difficult job as they work through a cloud of pollution as they tend to their crops. Climate change disproportionately a...ffects the poor, and it disproportionately affects people of color. These photos come from a food justice leaders recent trip to Egypt as he passed an early morning wave of pollution. When we grow food properly we can reduce climate emissions by planting crops that absorb carbon and increase soil fertility (and make life easier for Egyptian farmers like these). #foodjustice #climatejustice #tenderloin #Egypt See more
