Can caffeine counteract long-term sleep loss? . Caffeine is widely used to increase alertness. Besides regular use (e.g. drinking coffee every day), caffei...ne is also used to counteract a lack of sleep. . Caffeine can reduce some of the negative effects of acute sleep loss, such as a decreased reaction time and alertness (1). But is caffeine still effective with long-term sleep loss (>3 nights)? . The current study investigated the effect of caffeine (400 mg/day) on reaction speed performance (psychomotor vigilance test) during 5 nights of sleep restriction (5 h time in bed). All subjects were submitted to a testing facility during the full study period and were tested every hour. . Caffeine improved reaction speed during the first 3 nights of sleep restriction compared to the placebo. However, from the fourth day onwards, there was no difference between caffeine and the placebo. . These data suggest that caffeine can indeed help during sleep restriction, but is only a short-term fix. . In conclusion, caffeine can’t counteract long-term sleep loss. Caffeine seems to lose its efficacy for cognitive performance after several nights of sleep restriction. . Study: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29029309 . It is common to have increased work loads, heavier shopping bags, a little less sleep, a little more stress during the holiday season. Aches and pains might (or might not) be felt but these do not always mean soft tissues are damaged or hurt. These aches and pains will come and go once things settle and normalize. Should they persist, let’s talk about them. Message us for a consult. Thank you @honest_physio for the amazing infographic.

I guess over the years, via conversation, emails etc, I've come to believe, that for many people, pain is just the tip of their iceberg. Their bigger problems are beneath it and why #PainSelfMgt is so important. #PainToolkit #painrevolution

"(...)This spinal-stability model suggests that causes of symptoms are due to biomechanical instability, tissue damage, or structural change and are not in keep...ing with a contemporary understanding of musculoskeletal practice that values a multidimensional perspective." "(...)The combination of models contributed to the rise of motor control strategies to theoretically improve painful conditions by isolating movement strategies to target muscles that may contribute to instability. These motor control strategies have been linearly described as the rehabilitation strategy to retrain the deep stability muscles, with the vague notion of progressing to larger and more functional movements. This may, in fact, be simply a graded exposure program with respect to load and movement within safe environments among a myriad of contextually nonspecific factors. Such approaches lack the cognitive, behavioral, emotional, lifestyle, cultural, and contextual understanding that whole-person approaches to health care espouse." "(...)Concepts that are vague or not well understood have the potential of creating ambiguity, with unforeseen consequences that may negatively impact knowledge translation, patient centered care, clinical education, and, ultimately, patient-related outcomes." "(...)McNeill cautioned against using the term core stability, as it was imprecise and open to interpretation, and went on to describe core stability as a subset of motor control, suggesting that it required further clarity and perhaps should be abandoned. O’Sullivan is critical of both the terms stabilization and core stability with respect to the management of chronic nonspecific low back pain, stating that the biomedical explanation of lack of stability of the spine may cause fear, abnormal body focus and reinforces pain-related movement and avoidance behaviours, hypervigilance, catastrophising, pain and disability fuelling the vicious cycle of pain. " "(...)With developments in cognitive and pain neuroscience and a greater understanding of the complexities involved between pain and rehabilitation, the physical therapy profession may benefit from its continued vigilance against biomedical oversimplifications."

Have you or someone you know recently had a stroke? Starting intense rehabilitation as soon as possible after a stroke can increase the odds of recovering more function. https://bit.ly/2SktMPs

Most Americans will experience back pain. The good news is that most cases of low back pain are not serious and will respond well to conservative treatments such as treatment by a physical therapist. http://bit.ly/2CmLxJr #ChoosePT Infographic from MoveForwardPT

[POKING THE BEAR - SUSPECTED INJURY & TIMELINE . . . ***IMPORTANT EDIT*** THE FIRST SLIDE IS SUPPOSED TO SAY "STRAIN" IN THE CATEGORY OF MUSCLE, NOT SPRAIN. SIL...LY MISTAKE. . . If tissue injury is suspected as a major nociceptive driver in a pain experience, some consideration must be given to the TYPE of tissue injured, it’s average healing time and the time elapsed since its inception. . Generally speaking, very early on in soft tissue injuries (especially those more severe) the aim should be to protect the injury site. In these circumstances it may be preferable to avoiding POKING THE BEAR initially, as this more be putting healing tissue as risk of re-injury. . In other circumstances, like in the case of long-term tendinopathies, we know that loaded movement and little bits of pain are okay (and potentially necessary) for optimal recovery. . As always. It depends. Use good clinical reasoning when determining whether to POKE THE BEAR with different types of tissue injury. . Don’t sit still. Make moves! .
