Happy International Women’s Day! The Huntington Beach Police Community Foundation would like to pay tribute to our past female K9 handlers. Officer Lynn Cuadras served in the HBPD Narcotic Unit from 1992-98. She and K-9 Catje became partners in 1994 where Catje (Belgian Malinois) served as a Detection K-9, separate from the regular K-9 unit. Catje was also our first female K9. Officer Carole Ortiz was our Unit’s first female handler. She and K-9 Rudy (Belgian Malinois) served... in the mid-2000’s, where Rudy worked as an Apprehension & Detection K-9. We’re proud of our handler and working dog family and thank you wonderful women for your dedication and service. #workingdogfamily #k9unit #k9dogs #bluelinefamily #hbk9 Huntington Beach Police Department #happyinternationalwomensday

Kyle and his mom Gemma Gishi collected a total of 221 boxes of crayons for the kids fighting cancer with Team NEGU: Never Ever Give Up Knight and Marco greeted the warrior kids where the staff was VERY excited to see HBK9 stuff and put together Joy Jars" for each kid. Apparently there are several kids who always ask for police stuff so Ofcr Wilson made sure K9 Marco baseball cards were included too. Thank you Kyle & Gemma for bringing joy to these amazing k...ids ! (volume up) 2020 was a challenging year for our K9 unit: We sadly lost the Legend K9 Bodhy. ... K9 Marco and K9 Dingo both had major surgeries. K9 Dingo's surgery lead to his early retirement. Officer Kansaku and K9 Dingo served the Huntington Beach community for 5 years. Officer Scott changed careers, which lead to Officer Avalos becoming K9 Knight's new handler. Due to covid-19, our public appearances and demonstrations were limited. K9 Marco and K9 Knight continue to train weekly together with their handlers. Our K9 unit can not say THANK YOU enough to ALL of our supporters! We thank everyone who donated to our HB Police & Community Foundation K9 Fund, and to ALL of those who donated gear and gifts to us. We truly appreciate ALL of the generosity and support. Huntington Beach Police Community Foundation Huntington Beach Police Department Annjolie Griswold

Debuting this Sunday at Toys for Tots.....It’s here! Our new hoodies, zip up hoodies and Tshirts will debut Sunday 12/13 at the Toys for Tots event. This new logo features K9 Knight, our newest dog, and was designed by Edison High School, Huntington Beach senior ANNJOLIE GRISWOLD who designed it as part of a the Center for International Business and Communication Studies (CIBACS) program, a 4 year commitment with specialized teachers from the high school. For her senior yea...r and final project, Annjo was the only one who chose fundraising AND on behalf of the K9s and the construction of their new training field. In a time where law enforcement needs more support than ever, we at Huntington Beach Police Community Foundation and Huntington Beach Police Department were impressed by her huge heart and her drive. We are very lucky to have her on our side. She’ll be with us on Sunday at Toys for Tots . 10:00am - 1:00pm Huntington Beach Sports Complex Lot (18100 Goldenwest St.) Hopefully we’ll see you there, in your car or otherwise!

Repost from @huntington_beach_police To the Huntington Beach Community, . .... It is with many mixed emotions today, I am announcing my retirement from policing. After more than 30 years in policing and nine as a Police Chief and seven years here in HB, it is time for me to focus on my health, my family and whatever comes next in life. It has been the honor of my career and my absolute pleasure to have had the privilege of serving as your Police Chief. One of the things I have so enjoyed during my tenure here, is the passion you all have for our community. The people and the passion are what makes HB such a special place. It is not just the beautiful weather and the beaches, it is all of you. . . Thank you all for the support you have consistently shown for the men and women in the Department who serve you every day. With all of the difficulties in policing across the Country and the State, our team realizes how fortunate we are to serve in HB, because of our community. We are all in great hands as there are so many dedicated, talented and wonderful people in the Department serving this community with honor each and every day. Please continue to support the men and women of the Department and keep them and their families in your thoughts and prayers. . . HB has become our adopted home town. Today is the 46th anniversary of the death of HBPD Officer Leslie James Prince, killed in the line of duty while serving his community. On November 16, 1974, Officer Prince and his partner, Officer Steve Ekstedt, were assigned to assist a traffic officer with traffic control at Beach Boulevard and Adams Avenue. A power failure had caused the traffic signals to go dark. Shortly after his arrival, a pick-up truck sped into the intersection against the direction of another offi...cer and struck Officer Prince, throwing him onto the hood and carrying him for a distance before he rolled into the street when the vehicle came to rest. Paramedics tried life-saving measures before transporting him to the Huntington Intercommunity Hospital. He succumbed to his injuries on December 1, 1974. At the time of his death, he was 26 years old and a four-year veteran with the Huntington Beach Police Department. The man who struck him was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and vehicular manslaughter. This plaque with Ofcr Prince’s story was donated by the Huntington Beach Police & Community Foundation Huntington Beach Police Community Foundation and City of Huntington Beach employee associations. Ofcr Prince’s family still keeps in contact with Huntington Beach Police Department and attends his anniversary memorials every year. #neverforget

Lots of changes for our Department. As we say farewell to our Chief, we are also sending off Knight’s handler, Ofcr Alex Scott, who is leaving law enforcement and taking up a new opportunity for him and his family. It was not an easy decision for him to say goodbye to Knight, and that’s putting it mildly. We wish him all the best and hope to cross paths with him again. In the meantime, Knight (and you) will meet his new handler. He has been helping the handlers as a volunteer in the bite suit (that is some dedication lemme tell ya) and recently won thw Huntington Beach Police Department’s Officer of the Year award. #comingsoon

We are sending every possible hope, prayer and positive thought to the 2 deputies from Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department who were ambushed with gunfire last night and again assailed at the trauma center St. Francis Medical Center by those who wished death upon them and their families. May we never forget our deputies and officers who willingly and repeatedly put themselves in harm’s way and hope they make it home safe. Not everyone can do or last in this job. For those of us that appreciate our men and women in law enforcement, please hold these two deputies in your thoughts and pray for the best.

THE DOGS OF 9/11 RILEY This search and rescue Golden Retriever was from FEMA’s Pennsylvania Task Force. Riley’s passing in 2010 inspired a study of the long-term effects on this type of rigorous search and rescue work on canine health. APOLLO... German Shepherd Apollo (NYPD K-9 Urban Search and Rescue) and his handler, Peter Davis, were the first K-9 search and rescue team to answer the call on 9/ 11, arriving at the South Tower merely 15 minutes after its collapse. Apollo looked for survivors 18 hours a day for weeks on end. He earned one of the first AKC Humane Fund Awards for Canine Excellence (ACE) in 2001 as well as the Dickin Medal on behalf of all Patriot Day search and rescue dogs. SAGE Sage was a 2 year old search and rescue Border Collie when she and her handler, Diane Whetsel, worked the Pentagon after the 9/11 attacks. Sage won the highest-level recognition from FEMA Search and the Rescue Award for Canine Excellence. She and her handler also rescued animals stranded by Hurricane Rita and Hurricane Katrina and deployed to Iraq in 2007. Sage passed away in 2012 at the age of 13. BRETAGNE Bretagne (Brit-nee) and her owner-handler Denise Corliss worked 12-hour shifts on rescue and recovery for 10 days straight after the attacks on September 11. Bretagne began training at 8 weeks old, making her a lifelong veteran of rescue missions including Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Ivan. She retired at age 9, and helped local first-graders as a reading assistance dog. Bretagne passed at 16 in Texas, where she was saluted by representatives from the armed forces and local fire departments. TRAKR Trakr, a German Shepherd, and his Canadian police officer and handler, James Symington found the last remaining survivor from the World Trade Center after she had been trapped for 26 hours. TIME magazine named him 6th on their list of Top 10 Heroic Animals.Trakr won the BioArts International contest and was cloned five times before his passing in 2009 at the age of 14. The Trakr puppy clones (Trustt, Solace, Valor, Prodigy, and Deja Vu) continue Trakr’s legacy. All started their training as search and rescue dogs in 2011. Source: Maggie Dean, American Kennel Club Little known fact about these SAR (Search & Rescue) dogs : They became depressed after finding so many dead bodies that rescue workers would bury themselves for the dogs to find and pose as live survivors, to boost the dogs’ morale.

THANK YOU Litto Howler for donating to our K9’s these Noctis Traffic Lead Leashes. These special leashes feature a secondary traffic handle by the carabiner clip for more control, especially for dogs in crowded atmospheres. It keeps the dog next to the handler, and trains the dog to "heel" and walk with you, and not walk you. Each auto-locking carabiner on the Litto Howler leashes is made of aviation aluminum which makes it light (24 grams) but strong enough to bear a force of up to 1100 lbs. This carabiner solves the problem that non auto-locking carabiners can have of being left accidentally unlocked. Also, the attached swivel makes Litto Howler Leashes the only leash on the market that is totally tangle-free. Ever wonder what our K9 officers eat? (The dogs, not the handlers). They get a raw food blend from Rawsome Revolution that is put through the grinder by hand and delivered fresh. Our recipe is called the Bodhy Blend which is named after one of our late, beloved K9s. The recipe has beef, chicken, ground Chicken backs, beef tongue, turkey gizzards, beef heart, beef green tripe, beef liver, turkey liver, beef kidney, beef spleen. They‘re a small business and produce an incr...edible quality of a product. We saw a direct improvement in our dogs’ health and performance once they started on rawsome’s food. They have signature blends, single protein, cat recipes, and helpful recipe tips. Can you tell he loves his job? #wagwagwagwagwag #lookatme #ImAgoodboy #ifinddrugs #narcosmarcos @mank9dogs

Happy National Sunglasses Day Our doggos are happily twinning with their handlers for you all today. Sure they look cool but these Rex Specs doggles are also a favorite protection piece for both law enforcement and military working dogs.... Their spherical shape allows a wide range of vision, and they’re impact resistant against sharp ends, debris & dust, high gusts, shrapnel, and other hazards while they do their job. It also shields their eyes from micrograms of airborne narcotics and synthetic opiates during raids and searches that can cause permanent or fatal damage to these K9’s. While ferocious fur missiles, they’re still smaller than your average human. A little fentanyl will hit a dog harder than a full-size human. And of course - being in #surfcity - these doggles also protect against UV damage Enjoy the weekend everyone! Don’t forget your hoggles !! (human goggles) @ Huntington Beach, California

Not that long ago, we posted a photo of one of our youngest fundraisers, Kyle. Well....he did it again Since 2014, this wonderful young man singlehandedly and steadily raised money for our K9s. He even slung lemonade at his own lemonade stand to help raise funds for Huntington Beach Police Department four-legged officers. Last week he met again with K9 Marco and Ofcr Wilson and handed over $300+ that he raised in ONE DAY through his own Venmo account: @KyleG_H...BK9 To date, Kyle has raised over $2,000 for our dogs!! Kyle is not so little anymore....but we are so impressed and so humbled by this young man. THANK YOU KYLE. Your big heart has benefited and boosted all the dogs in our K9 unit for so many years. #Marco #Knight #Bodhy #Dingo #hbk9

We receive questions and interest about our K9’s ballistic vests from K9 Storm Inc, like this one on Knight. Each vest is custom fit and protects the dog’s vital organs from being shot, stabbed, slashed, and other potentially fatal injuries. The vests are also designed to enable the dog to track, search, rappel, extract and apprehend. Our last three vests, including this one, were purchased with donations from our community. ... The Vaseys (Paul Vasey Sherene Paul Vasey) graciously donated to purchase one custom fit vest. Carrington Charitable Foundation donated $1,000 for another and The Vaseys led their Citizen Academy Class #35 to generously contribute the remainder. HB business and K9 unit supporter Paws Chateau - A Luxury Resort for your dog donated $3,000 for yet another K9 Storm ballistic vest. THANK YOU again to everyone who donated and made it possible to protect our K9s. THANK YOU to the following people from the HBPD Citizens Academy Class #35 who generously donated: Law office of Jeffrey D. Our K9 Unit is supported by the Huntington Beach PD K9 Fund, a part of the city’s Huntington Beach Police Community Foundation whose purpose is to enhance the community support for a better working relationship with the officers and working dogs of the Huntington Beach Police Department . . Our dogs LOVE to work. They love to train. And when they put on their uniform , they know they’re putting on their superhero cape. They will work through countless injuries and long, late ...hours of the night to put themselves in harm’s way again and again. . . Our merchandise is one way we raise funds for these dogs to have protective vests, training equipment, and other needs that help them do their job. If you wish to donate directly, without purchasing an item, you can do so through our Foundation website: www.hbpcf.org . . We can never stop thanking you for your continued support. #hbstrong #hbk9 #onehb See more

PLEASE HELP A FELLOW K9 HANDLER . As many of you are aware, Santa Cruz deputy sheriffs were ambushed on June 6, 2020, responding to a call about a van with guns and explosives inside. K9 handler Deputy Alex Spencer along with Sergeant Damon Gutzwiller faced multiple improvised explosive devises and an assault rifle. . .... Sgt Gutzwiller was shot and taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, leaving behind his pregnant wife and young child. K9 handler Dep. Spencer was severely injured by shrapnel from the explosive device and struck by the suspect’s vehicle. Dep. Spencer’s K9 Dries was in the vehicle at the time and thankfully not harmed. . . However, Dep. Spencer now has a long road to recovery with his wife and son. His fellow handlers and deputies are asking that if you can help their family during this difficult time, please head over to click on the GoFundMe link: https://www.gofundme.com/f/Scdeputyinjured All monies donated will go directly to the Deputy and his family so they can focus on recovery without worries of financial issues. . This has been a very challenging time for our #bluelinefamily but a great opportunity to show our support for one another. Thank you to our community supporters for all you do to help keep us going.
