They are essential service workers; responsible for protecting the public and their pets from aggressive or diseased animals, enforcing our local municipal ordinances, and State and Federal laws, and educating the community about prop...Continue reading

Axel, a 6 year old Beagle mix, is quite the character. Obviously a photogenic boy, he is very food motivated. He even has been known to grin for pictures or food. He's very sweet, he is quite vocal. A potential owner should be fond of loud dogs. We believe he would do best in a home with teens & adults. Axel’s adoption is sponsored by #SantaConHayward.

Remember Pablo? He came into our shelter last November. He had lived most of his life as a backyard dog, and had turned into an escape artist because he was bored and craving attention from people. It can be hard finding home for large dogs in an urban environment like Hayward. Luckily, a kind family offered to foster-to-adopt. They brought him home and it didn’t take them long to fall in love and decide to finalize the adoption. ... They recently sent us these photos to let us know how things have been going. His new family reports that Pablo adjusted to his new home quickly. They tell us he is a HUGE snuggle bug who hasn’t tried escaping his new home, instead he has been more of a Velcro-dog who just wants to spend all his time by his family’s side. His new family is only all too happy to let him cuddle up. It looks like Pablo has found his perfect match! Congratulations, Pablo! We are so happy you found a family to call your own!

Thank you Judith and Wendy for raising $1000 for the Hayward Animal Shelter while simultaneously keeping people safe and looking stylish with your beautiful masks! Judith originally started making masks to give away because she wanted to help people stay safe during the pandemic. Wendy, Judith's daughter and an animal lover, asked if she could sell some of the masks as a fundraiser for the animal shelter. The fundraiser has been wildly successful with 200 masks sold and $1000 raised for the shelter animals. We are so grateful! We also love the design of the masks and all the great patterns! Thank you!

Lindor decided to take things into her own paws and has started promoting herself for adoption by hopping up to sit in the "adopt me" window. Lindor is a sassy, independent female bunny whose communication skills are on point. She won't hesitate to tell when she likes or doesn't like something. Lindor enjoys playing in her bunny tunnels, people watching from her window perch, and snacking on fresh veggies and herbs like parsley, basil, rosemary, and cilantro. Lindor has made... it clear she would like to be in a single (just her) bunny home. She does not like to share. Her adoption is free to qualified homes thanks to a generous volunteer who has sponsored her adoption. To adopt visit www.haywardanimals.org/adoptions and fill out an adoption application and an adoption counselor will contact you.

Pocket Pet Party! We have Guinea Pigs and Rabbits available for adoption! They don't bark, and make great quarantine buddies! Meet Biscuit, Bailey, Scotty, and Milo, four male guinea pigs looking for homes. Guinea Pigs are easy keepers (though they do poop a lot) and are social animals that enjoy the company of other guinea pigs and people! ... Meet our bunnies; Daisy, Daffodil, Truffle, and Lindor. Rabbits make great pets, but do require some specialized care such as a veterinarian that is familiar with rabbit health. With a little preparation, a rabbit could be the perfect pet for you! Daisy a sweet and gentle female bunny who will hop up to greet you when you come into the room and is good with handling. She enjoys fresh veggies and soft bedding to burrow and nap in. Daffodil a very sweet (but sometimes shy) female bunny who is easy to handle and gentle. She likes hay chew toys, fresh greens, and bunny hide-a-way castles to sleep in. Truffle, an laid back and easy going male bunny who is curious about his surroundings and likes hopping around. He enjoys playing with his chew toys, snacking on hay and fresh greens, and exploring his room. Lindor, a sassy, independent female bunny who loves a good view. She will jump on on her windowsill and people watch all day. She also enjoys her tunnel toys, and fresh herbs like parsley, cilantro, basil and rosemary. She won't hesitate to let you know what she likes, and what she doesn't, her communication skills are on point. Lindor wants to be the only bunny in the house. A generous volunteer has offered to sponsor the adoption fees of these pets, so their adoptions are free to qualified homes. To adopt visit www.haywardanimals.org/adoptions and fill out an adoption application and an adoption counselor will call you. Or call (510) 293 - 2700 for more information on these pocket pets. Stella is ready for Halloween! Are you? Stella has been with us for almost 3 months. She’s about 4 years old. Already spayed, and ready to show you tricks for treats! Stella is our lone adoptable, and we haven’t had much interest in her. Can you share her far and wide to see if someone wants to open their home and heart to this love bug? She’s a good sport when it comes to dressing up and posing. She’s about 70lbs and we think she’d do best in a home with older children. She’s not a big player with other dogs, she prefers the company of people (they give food!) Stella’s adoption is sponsored by SantaCon Hayward.

Meet Cleo! Cleo is a 10 year old spayed female kitty who came into our shelter after her owner passed away. At first Cleo was really scared and just hid under her bed. With lots of love from staff she soon adjusted and began getting used to all the treats and attention. Cleo needs love, patience, and attention to let her personality really shine, but with the right family we know she would just blossom! Stella's doggie day out! Stella went on a field trip! She got to soak up some rays and seemed to enjoy looking out the window of the car. Stella is a 4 year old female pit-mix that has been with our shelter since August. Stella is super smart and already knows come, sit, and stay. With a little more training she could learn a lot more tricks! ... Stella walks great on leash and is very treat motivated. She enjoys treat puzzle toys, spending time with her favorite people, and occasionally playing with balls or squeaky toys. Stella gets along pretty well with other dogs, but she is not a fan of cats OR squirrels. Even though Stella is an energetic pup, once she gets a little play time or a good walk she settles down nicely and would probably do just fine in an apartment. She would love to find a home with an active family that could take her on lots more field trips. To adopt Stella call Hayward Animal Shelter (510) 293 - 7200 or visit www.haywardanimals.org/adoptions to fill out an adoption application.
