By Paul Klein Like many of our local stores in Hayfork, many have colorful and historic stories to tell and the Feed Store in Hayfork is no exception. I interviewed the current owner, Jessica Ford for this article, and she took me back to 1947 when the store primarily operated as a Hardware store & was owned by the Brown Family. It was later sold to Dennis & Bonnie Frye who then sold it to Steve & Carrie Bayley. They subsequently sold it to the Ford Family. Tim & Sue Ford cam...e to Hayfork during 1999-2000. What I can say about this family is they are extremely intelligent with a capital I. I’m not going to go into their previous careers, but they are very approachable and they would probably be willing to share that info with you. What I will say about Tim, is that if I wanted to be the oldest person to set foot on the moon, Tim could make that happen, if I was willing to pay the price for it. Jessica Ford left her job as an engineer and followed her parents to Hayfork in 2004. It didn’t take her long to become involved in the community. She has been a Hayfork Rotarian, a previous V.P. with the Fairgrounds Board. Also, a past President of the Hayfork High School Booster Club and a prior Hayfork Fire Dept. Volunteer. It wasn’t long after she arrived that she and her parents entered into a partnership to purchase the Feed Store from the Bayley’s. The Ford’s transformed the store from its traditional Hardware theme to its current focus. Currently, the store is focused on Livestock Feed including Pet Feed & Supplies & Garden Supplies. Jessica eventually purchased her parents’ interests in the store & incorporated it as the sole owner in 2012. Jessica has expanded the Garden Supply section of the store to adjust and conform to the needs of the growing legal cannabis industry in the area. Jessica’s plans for the future are to expand by offering liquid nutrients, a frozen food section for dogs & cats & a live reptile section. Jessica became married in 2020. She resides in Douglas City with her husband and stepson. This is an ideal location for being able to supervise the operation of the Evergreen Farm Feed & Garden Store in Weaverville which she purchased in 2019. She is highly energetic & intelligent enough to be up to the challenges of operating both stores. Our Hayfork Chamber of Commerce is proud & honored to Spotlight the Feed Store as our member for the Month of March 2021.
