Haven for Birth 30.04.2021

Sadness and anger don’t begin to express the feelings over hearing about another Black man killed by unnecessary force. Today if you are able we are simply encouraging you to take a moment and honor his life by supporting his family. This post has many ways to do that, you can also share the original post by @holisticheaux to spread awareness of their needs. We can’t change the system overnight but together we can demand better. #blacklivesmatter #justicefordauntewright #dauntewright #blm

One of the most important things a doula does during birth is to help the birthing person establish and re-establish rituals to help them cope with contractions. The pregnant person can plan rituals such as breath or movement techniques in advance, but sometimes in the heat of the moment, those go out the window, or the person finds that there is something else entirely that might soothe them. That is where doulas come in: they can suggest rituals to try and see what’s the ri...ght fit, and they can assist the laboring parent in maintaining consistency when the contractions become intense. A doula might suggest a certain type of rocking motion or sound. They might say a word and help you focus on direct eye contact throughout every contraction or help you count your way through. They can help position you and your support partner to sway or slow dance during contractions. A doula will help create and maintain the rhythm of the ritual, which can facilitate calm and allow the body to do its job without the anxious mind getting in the way. We want to know: what were some spontaneous or planned rituals that helped you during labor? #havenforbirth #birthwithoutfear #letsdoulathis #birthjustice #birthdance See more

Feed Me Fridays: Breastfeeding can sometimes be an isolating experience, when thoughts of inferiority or brokenness can consume new mothers. That’s why we’re so grateful for books like Free to Breastfeed: Voices of Black Mothers by Jeanine Valrie Logan and Anayah Sandodele-Ayoka. This book highlights stories of the legacy, myths, traditions, benefits, and challenges black mothers encounter when breastfeeding, all from firsthand accounts. If you’re looking for a little reinforcement and companionship during your breastfeeding journey, you can check out the book from our lending library or order it through local black owned bookstore, @undergroudbooks! #havenforbirth #supportbirthers #lendinglibrary #birthjustice #lactationsupport #supportlocal : @mamafreshchi

WOC Wednesday - @shafiamonroe On Wednesdays this month, we’re introducing our community to some of the most inspiring black birth workers we know. Shafia Monroe is a celebrated midwife, doula trainer, motivational speaker, and cultural competency trainer who has been in birth work for over 40 years. Called The Queen Mother of the Midwife Movement, Monroe has spent her life dedicated to reducing infant mortality through homebirth services, training community midwives, and pr...oviding prenatal education. Soak in her incredible wisdom by checking out her interview with @avivaromm in which Shafia dives deep into the roots of African birthing, care traditions, and the impact of racism on birth in the United States. We’re so grateful for the work she’s done and for all the lives she’s impacted through her teaching, delivering, and fighting fiercely for birth equity. #havenforbirth #birthjustice #blackbirthsmatter #blacklivesmatter #birtheducation See more

Doula Tuesday: Did you know that Haven was founded with the mission to reduce racial disparities in health outcomes in maternity care? Some of the ways we do this are through providing prenatal birth doulas, postpartum doulas, lactation consultations, chiropractic care, massage therapy, and other pregnancy support such as a free resource library and the baby shower we are hosting next week! Check out Jayden getting buried in donations No matter your ability to compensate for our services, we believe that every birthing person deserves the support to have an empowering, amazing birth experience. #havenforbirth #birthjustice #letsdoulathis #blackdoulas #communitysupport

We want to bring attention on Black History Month to Black Women’s birth experience! Black mothers are often not listened to when they report signs of possible complications of pregnancy and birth. Not only are their concerns dismissed, but traumatic birthing experiences are so common that one-quarter of Black women report disrespect and abuse from medical professionals in the hospital. Deaths and severe complications related to pregnancy and childbirth are the tip of the ic...eberg of medical harm experienced by Black birthing people, from rushed prenatal visits to unnecessary and unwanted cesarean births, which can cause postpartum infections, wound problems and death. Childbirth is far more hazardous for Black women than white women. This is why we exist, we exist to ensure this doesn’t happen to any Black woman in our community. We exist because we want to make sure that, even when you can’t pay our services, we will be there for you. Money will never be in the way from providing you with our support during this period that should be an amazing journey for every family in our community. Today as Black History Month begins, we want to fortify our commitment to all the Black families out there. We see you, we hear you, we are fighting for change for you. #havenforbirth #birthjustice #BLM #BlackFamiliesBirthing #Blackwomen #BlackTransWomen #BlackWomenBirthJustice

One of the most common conversations we have had during the pandemic is why would I hire a doula, when you can’t be in the hospital with me? Well let’s discuss!.... A lot of a doula support happens before you arrive at the hospital! The doula's goal, and role, is to help the client feel safe and comfortable! Having a doula also allows your partner to be an active participant in the process. The contributions of doulas during labor and childbirth have been studied and have b...een shown to benefit their clients. A birth doula providing support during childbirth increases likelihood of vaginal birth (rather than cesarean delivery), decrease the need for pain medication during labor, and improve the perception of the birthing experience. Still have more questions? Schedule your free consult today. We’d love to chat with you. #havenforbirth #doulasupport #birthjustice #birthworkersofcolor Unrelated but how cute are these shirts?
