Did you know that monarchs are the only butterfly known to make a two-way annual migration that mirrors that of birds? From August through October, masses of monarchs embark on a 2,500 mile migration journey that takes them from the southern reaches of Canada to the remote mountains of central Mexico. Don’t be fooled by their small size, these migrating pollinators are fast flyers and can cover anywhere between 50-200 miles in a single day! At night, tired butterflies gather... in clusters (like the ones photographed here) to roost and rest. This week, HWF co-founders experienced a garden full of migrating butterflies in their own backyard! Interested in seeing butterflies in your own garden? Try planting some of their favoritesmilkweed, verbena, zinnias, and Mexican sunflowers. Keep your eyes to the sky and wave hello to our friends in passing. Photos by Sandor Havasi See more

MIgaloo, the white humpback whale, is so rare that Australians have created legislation to protect him from humans getting too close. Watch as he swims through the ocean and shows off his impressive breaching skills. Stay tuned this week for our blog on whales and dolphins of the Santa Barbara Channel!

Last week, HWF attended an exciting lecture at the California Science Center where they were introduced to a chuckwalla lizard, a boa constrictor, a spiny-tailed lobster, red abalone and Madagascar cockroaches! The CSC has is filled with amazing animals, many of which you can learn about in this week's wildlife journal by HWF co-founder, Marilyn Fordney.
