#MiracleMicrochips As more pets are chipped we are seeing more pets going home after being lost. Each reunion is inspiring and magical but some just have us soaring higher. Felio and Michaelle definitely won this weeks' Most Magical Microchip story!... Last summer Michaelle moved a very short distance to a new apartment. Her indoor kitty, Felio escaped through an open balcony door during the move. She did a thorough search for him, posting flyers, etc. Even with a collar, tag and chip no one spotted him. Susan, a Rocklin resident was working with trapper, Jim G to TNR some cats in her complex. On Friday morning Jim trapped a kitty and transported him to FieldHaven. Along the way he noticed an odd, nauseating smell coming from the trap. The cause was soon found to be a collar that he had somehow put his leg through which cut away at the underarm flesh for who knows how long. From the depth of the wound and the condition of the collar it was probably months. Not to mention the putrid small of the necrotic flesh. At FieldHaven we immediately found a microchip. Audra called his mom and a tear-filled reunion followed! After some initial treatment to clean up the wound, Felio was transferred to his regular vet for further treatment. The lessons we learned: 1) MICROCHIP!! We can't say that enough 2) Don't give up! Felio was missing about 8 months and he was very near his home. 3) Collars are great but please use breakaway collars.

Welcome to new volunteer, Erin. Erin has experience as a vet tech and she is putting that experience to good use as a recovery nurse. That's Tracy with her. Tracy volunteers as a clinic scheduler and admissions coordinator but helps out in so many other areas. Most of our volunteers help out multiple areas. Here Erin is learning from Corinne how "garbage day" works! It takes a village!

Buck's Barn is a holding area for community cats awaiting spay/neuter. Volunteer trappers who are working colonies can bring in cats to board until clinic day. It's a very special place under the care of Jen Paul and her team.

Let's Talk Kitten Sex - Lesson One When scheduling your appointment at Hathaway Clinic it really helps if you can give us an accurate sex on the kitty you're bringing in. Now, if it's feral and you would be in danger of loosing a finger or two trying to sex the cat, please leave it to our staff to determine when kitty is safely asleep. However, if you have a friendly kitten you can use this handy guide to inspect "down there" and sex the kitten. ... Why do we care what sex they are? After all, we're just getting rid of all those parts so what's the big deal whether it's a boy or girl. It's all about time management and production. A spay is an open abdominal surgery that requires different anesthesia, procedures and take a lot longer than a simple neuter. It is, after all a complete hysterectomy! A neuter is not invasive and a very quick procedure. So, if you bring us five "boys" and we find some of them are girls that impacts our schedule and makes for a much longer day. Don't worry about being 100% perfect on kitten sexing - we all make mistakes once in awhile but the more accurate we can be the better. What other Kitten Sex questions do you have?
