Q: Should I open a 529 plan account? A: Although, a 529 College Plan is one option, I like the similar benefits that you get from your Roth IRA with a lot more flexibility. The appeal of the 529 is the tax-free growth and high limits of what can be contributed. Can be promoted to family and be funded by credit card purchase cash back rewards. The restriction is that the money is intended only for college without penalties and taxes.... The Roth has tax free growth; it is limited to $5,500/year. You can fund multiple objectives like future purchases, education and retirement for yourself and your child. The principal can be used for any purpose without tax or penalty. Only the earnings must be used in retirement to avoid tax / penalty. When you come to the point of maxing out your Roth and funding as much as you care to with your 401k (match at a minimum), then it would be good to look at 529 or custodial account. The custodial account is practically tax free because it is in the minor's tax id. There are no limits to how much can be funded. It can be used to benefit the minor in any way necessary so not restricted to education. The custodial account is legally the minor's when they reach the age of majority (18 in Ca). The minor can take over at that point or allow it to be continually managed by the custodian (you). Most cases I have found that the minor is unaware of the rules and will follow the custodian’s guidance. I tend to side toward caution and life rarely goes as planned so having the least amount of restrictions is preferable. I can help with any or all of these, they can be funded with mutual funds which are the best way to be diversified, and with small systematic purchases that can be turned off and on. Hope that helps. I would be happy to discuss this personally and review your other accounts as well.
For all of you sitting on an old 401k, get up and do something with it. 401k rollover to IRA's are easy and avoid taxes and penalties. Let's talk.

HEALTH CARE PRINCIPLES - I like #6 It is surprising how much we can learn from literature in 3rd world countries. Take a look at these principles described in the book, "Where there are no doctors 2015:" 1. Health care is not only everyone’s right, but everyone’s responsibility. 2. Informed self-care should be the main goal of any health program or activity.... 3. Ordinary people provided with clear, simple information can prevent and treat most common health problems in their own homesearlier, cheaper, and often better than can doctors. 4. Medical knowledge should not be the guarded secret of a select few, but should be freely shared by everyone. 5. People with little formal education can be trusted as much as those with a lot. And they are just as smart. 6. Basic health care should not be delivered, but encouraged. See more
