A message from #NHMLAC President and Director Dr. Lori Bettison-Varga: This week’s events are deeply disturbing. The rise in anti-Asian racism and violence con...tinues; my heart goes out to members of our community who are living in fear during a time of social isolation. In this particular instance, we are also confronted with the intersection of race and gender. Black, Indigenous, and women of color endure sexism and racism today just as they have throughout history. The Atlanta shootings raise issues of sexualized racism and call into question the ways in which ‘hate crimes’ may or may not be designated based on the gender of the victims or survivors. At the NHMLAC, we stand against xenophobia, racial violence, misinformation, and discrimination. But it is our actions that speak louder than our words of solidarity. We must come together to work towards mutual respect and the opportunity to live with dignity and feel safe. #NHMLAC's Research & Collections team is committing to taking June 10 to #ShutDownSTEM. It is not business as usual. We are taking the time today to educate ourselves, talk to others, and brainstorm in our teams about what anti-Black racism work looks like in our respective STEM fields and in museums.

In solidarity with Black Lives Matter, we are pausing this #BlackoutTuesday to honor and enact a day focused on community involvement to confront and someday end systemic racism and anti-Black racism. We, the #NHMLAC, stand with the Black community and commit to be museums where everyone is seen, heard, represented and respected.
