Harbor Gateway Torrance Outreach 03.05.2021

30 years ago today my parents and numerous volunteers opened the Harbor Gateway Torrance Outreach. They started with the low-income seniors and my dad saw there... were so many low-income families in our community he opened it to all. We have had numerous sponsors through out the years Disneyland , Starbucks, Halldale Ave. School, Council People Janice Hahn, Joan Mile Flores, Rudy Svorinich Jr., Joe Buscanio. Harbor City / Harbor Gateway Chamber Of Commerce, Lion Club, Harbor Gateway Community Council , LAPD Harbor Division and numerous private donators. We have lost a lot of our volunteers through out the years but God has given us new ones to help keep us going and to fight hunger in our community. If I have missed anyone I am sorry I appreciate all that everyone has done for us. See more

My dad stated " These people didn't ask for our help, but we immediately thought we could do something to improve their situation" as my dad and mom were drivin...g thru the community cleaning areas that needed cleaning. They became aware of all the low-income seniors that lived in the Harbor Gateway". The food bank opened 30 years ago in September. The Harbor Gateway Torrance Outreach started for seniors and then there were so many low-income families the doors opened up for all. Today we handed out to over 100 families in our community that needed food. My volunteers were in the rain in the wet grass handing out to people that came for help. Since the park was closed we set up shop on the sidewalk and took care of business. I loved how so many people were happy to get a bag of food. I am so happy my parents started the food bank and I can continue their dreams today. See more

Well Harbor Gateway Torrance Outreach will be Celebrating our 30th year of helping the low-income families in our community and surrounding areas. A Brief History of the food bank. Bill and Retha Horst had volunteered numerous hours working in our community and their church. They became aware of so many low-income families struggling in the community to put food on their families table. My parents donated their savings to have a lawyer in the area help make their dream come... true. My parents had the support from the community and they all came together and made a Board Of Directors and lots of volunteers to help open the food bank. September 18th 1990 was our first official day we opened the food bank. Six days after the opening my mom passed away. My dad continued their dreams. He soon retired from Dow Chemical and focused on the food bank. We opened 2 sites where there were so many families that needed help. January 27th 2013 Bill Horst passed away. Before he passed I promised him I would continue his and my mothers dream. The food bank has grown with volunteers and also with families we are serving. We are planning this year to have a big celebration for Thanksgiving to celebrate our 30 years of serving our community. Also to say Thank you to our fellow and current volunteers. The food bank will be handing out the 4th Tuesday of each month at Normandale Park & Harbor Gateway Boys & Girls Club ( Denker & Del Amo ) Next food bank will be January 28th 2020. See more
