The neck. Ouch. Such a piece to remember in the vocal equation: how many muscles are you using in your neck and around your throat that are unnecessary? And w...hat conditions of your life are affecting sound? Computer neck is prevalent, along with driving tension, cultural body slumps and chin positioning, along with simple tension reactivity along the spine. These all shape the voice, and can produce tense quality, limited resonance, reduced flexibility, and sometimes damage to the vocal cords. Why do we have necks in the first place? Turns out it's a genetic advantage that helped produce our brains.. "By deciphering the genetics in humans and fish, scientists now believe that the neck -- that little body part between your head and shoulders -- gave humans so much freedom of movement that it played a surprising and major role in the evolution of the human brain, according to New York University and Cornell University neuroscientists in the online journal Nature Communications (July 27, 2010.)" And of course, then talking and vocalizing became unique ways of connecting and communicating - and expressing! So how do we get in our way with this 'smart neck'? Part of the problem - see the diagram - is the number of muscles between the head/jaw and the body below. Counting the muscles on both sides there are 22-to-30 (depending on which you include) so there are any number of ways to misuse the muscles, and this is affected by your spine, your feet, your core, and more. Getting to a free neck is just like any other muscular retraining - it takes consciousness and time. And there are five sets of muscles that control the larynx itself! Separating, contracting, stretching, closing, and pressing...these are the micro- adjusters of sound. But for now, let's look at the exterior neck muscles, because: "Though each of the strap (exterior) muscles is responsible for a single specific movement, when there's tension in the neck, the muscles tend to contract as a unit (all at once). " Yup, we're not good at separating our control of all those neck muscles. For singers, the neck issue can come from (in my experience) five main directions: 1) Physiology: a longer and shorter necks present different challenges (and definitely different resonance options!) 2) Emotional habits: where in you neck does your tension appear when activated under different conditions? Connection to your jaw, shoulder inclusion, cervical vertebrae...we all have patterns. 3) Strength and/or Flexibility training: what exercise mode is your base? A yoga person has a different concept than a weight lifter 4) Postural habituation: computers, driving, waiting tables, desks... where does your neck live and what do you do for optimal singing... 5) Core, Core, Core: for me this is a key thing - maybe not so much for others. Lungs, ribs, abdominal support... I have to remind myself to center the energy and not create the voice just from the neck. Flow and resonate all the way down. What can you do? 3 simple steps to start! 1 --- Find the Support/Relaxed balance: How much do you let your singing position affect the neck: standing, microphone or not, a piano/guitar...or choir or theatre? Conditions change the equation for adjustment. See how you can transfer support below the clavicles no matter where you standing. 2 --- Attention: feel when and where tension appears in your neck in different situations - and find your remedy/adjustment that lets that go. 3 --- Breath: Find the minimalist place between breath and clear - not breathy - sound: what is the simplest, non-interference place for a comfortable note? How do you make friends with the cords? Talk to me!
