Today on #nationalwomenphysiciansday I want to thank my mom as well as those brave female physicians before her for paving the way for me and my peers. My mother had to work harder to prove herself, to be taken seriously, to be valued and respected in her field all while facing the inequalities and hardships of being a woman. She was pregnant with me while she was a dermatology resident in the same program that I would graduate from decades later. I joke with her tha...t I may have absorbed some Dermatology skills in utero.But she didn’t have the luxury of maternity leave. For months she was even too scared to let her chairman know she was with child for fear they may dismiss her or regret having accepted a woman into the program in the first place. A lot has changed since then. And perhaps we still have a ways to go. I would like to see women of color across more fields of medicine. I would like to see more women chairs of departments and deans.
