Like so many of you, we are devastated by the death of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on Friday. Much has been written about the tremendous legacy Justice Ginsburg leaves in her wake: the second woman to serve on the Court, she faced gender discrimination early on in her career when, upon graduating from Columbia Law School, a Supreme Court clerkship eluded her because she was a woman. She viewed our Constitution as embracing and emblematic of social progress,... and frequently issued scathing dissenting opinions, which she read aloud from the bench, from decisions she believed derailed that progress. The impacts of her life's work are both deep and wide: her pioneering work developing the ACLU's Women's Rights Project in the 1970s led to five Supreme Court victories in the fight for gender equality, and years later, as a Supreme Court Justice, she penned a landmark decision that forced the public Virginia Military Institute to admit women to its ranks. In 2007, she sharply dissented in a case that limited the ability of employees to sue their employers for gender discrimination, and she called upon Congress to amend the law. The result was the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. These are but a few of her contributions, and we are deeply indebted to Justice Ginsburg for her work furthering equality and justice in American society. The entire Haeggquist & Eck team mourns the loss of this incredible warrior, scholar, crusader, and dissenter. May her memory be a revolution.
