Dear Gymboree Families, As this unexpected and tumultuous year comes to a close, I am taking a moment to reflect on the 2020 experience and to count my blessings. This was, without a doubt, a difficult year for us. We are a small business that focuses on small humans. We strive to bring joy and happiness, silliness and songs, play and presence, to babies, toddlers, preschoolers, new moms, new dads, grandparents, and caretakers. We love to be a place where families gather an...d where connections are made. Our philosophy is rooted in togetherness -- playing together, learning together, sharing the same space to grasp social and emotional skills. This pandemic has forced us to find "togetherness" in a different way. We shifted to virtual classes in April, and then sought togetherness through socially distant outdoor classes in June. We have always understood that our pandemic makeshift classes could never replace what we do in our indoor space -- no sharing, no hugs, no Gymbo stamps, no crowding around the parachute, no bubbles. If I could hug every parent/caretaker behind the screen, I would. I know this is hard for the grownups. Raising a child without community is a daunting task. I have found solace in the people around me -- my fellow Gymboree owners, all facing the same struggles, who have provided unbridled moral and emotional support; my Gymboree families, who send in words of support via email or on social media or during small talk after I teach an outdoor class....small acts of kindness and empathy have meant a great deal; my staff and teachers, who have rolled with the punches of 2020 and execute my multiple pivot ideas; my neighboring small business owners in Lamorinda, who understand the challenges intimately; my close friends who have shared a helping hand with my kids and needs on the homefront; and finally my husband and kids, who always provide the support, love, distraction, and humor to match my freneticism to keep plugging along. 2020 seems like a blur. As I look towards 2021, my hope for recovery is strong. We will return to what we do best. I look forward to seeing all of the smiling faces, to meeting all of the 2020 babies, and to bringing the Gymboree joy to everyone again! Wishing you all a safe, healthy, and happy holiday season!
