Donald Garlits is an American race car driver, automotive engineer, and Eagle Scout. Considered the father of drag racing, he is known as "Big Daddy" to drag racing fans around the world. Garlits was an early promoter of the full-body, fire-resistant Nomex driving suit, complete with socks, gloves, and balaclava. Garlits was the first drag racer to officially surpass the 270 mile-per-hour marks in the quarter mile; he was also the first to top 200 mph (320 km/h) in the 18 mi... (0.20 km). After World War II, in the central and western United States, many air force bases and landing fields were decommissioned. These abandoned runways were perfect for drag racing. Don Garlits's first drag race car was built under an oak tree at his home in North Tampa in 1954. He used an arc welder and a cutting torch to modify an old 1927 Ford Model T Roadster. To this roadster he added a 1948 Mercury engine block, a 1939 Ford floor shift transmission, and a 1948 Ford differential and axle. That early T-Bucket's quarter mile performance was 13.5 seconds, at a top speed of 93 mph. It was this successful, formative roadster that would become the basis for his first rail-job dragster. He cut off the body panels, moved the engine back, and installed the seat behind the drive axle. This was the legendary slingshot dragster with which Big Daddy would win the first NHRA race he entered, the NHRA Safety Safari (12.1 seconds, 108 mph). Three years later, he became a professional drag racer. Don Garlits, being from Florida, was something of an outsider. He was sometimes referred to as the Floridian, before permanently adopting the nickname "Swamp Rat," which also became the name for each new generation of his innovative dragster designs. On March 8, 1970, Garlits was driving Swamp Rat XIII, a front-engined slingshot rail dragster, when the vehicle suffered a catastrophic failure. The two-speed transmission Garlits was developing exploded and took a piece out of his right foot, while the car broke in half in front of the cockpit; he was out for the remainder of the season. That is when he drew up plans for what he thought would be a championship rear-engine car. Garlits would use a wheelchair to go out to his shop and saw stuff out with a band saw and making new parts. Swamp Rat XIV became so successful that in 1971, Garlits won two of his next three Top Fuel Eliminator titles. Rear engine dragsters have since become mainstream in drag racing. On October 20, 1987, his dragster Swamp Rat XXX, the sport's only successful streamlined fueler was enshrined in National Museum of American History, a branch of The Smithsonian museum in Washington, DC. Meet the artist behind beloved Hallmark ornaments featuring Scoutmaster Snoopy Tracy Larsen, lead designer for the Peanuts collection in the Hallmark company’s Keepsake Ornaments division. Larsen is, in fact, a Scouting alumnus. He was a Cub and Boy Scout in Utah. Although he never achieved Eagle Scout, he has two sons that did. ... The ideas really come from personal experiences from Scouting, Larsen says. There are so many activities that Scouts participate in that there seems to be a never-ending supply of ideas to use. It is then just a matter of fitting Snoopy and his Woodstock’s patrollers in the situation in a fun and clever way. Choosing which Beagle Scout adventure to immortalize in plastic takes Larsen back to his days as a Cub and Boy Scout. Larsen was fortunate to live in the mountains. He recalls that many of his fondest memories of Scouting took place camping and taking hikes in the mountains. Larsen’s favorite Beagle Scout ornament is one that he did not actually design himself. The 2015 edition featuring the Pinewood Derby race. It brings up memories participating with his own two sons. Larsen has created many of the 14 Beagle Scout ornaments from 2007 to 2020. He is most proud of an ornament called Holiday En-tree-preneurs where Snoopy and Woodstock sell Christmas Trees. Can’t have Scouting without fundraising! Larsen says

Thomas Rolland Norris is a retired United States Navy SEAL, Medal of Honor recipient and Distinguished Eagle Scout. April 10-13, 1972 Quang Tri Province, Vietnam Lieutenant Norris and Petty Officer Third Class Nguyen Van Kiet went behind enemy lines disguised as fishermen in a sampan to rescue two downed aircrew members. Norris was awarded the Medal of Honor and Nguyen was recognized with the Navy Cross for their actions. Norris was one of only three SEALs to receive the Meda...l of Honor during the Vietnam War. Six months later, Norris and Navy SEAL Michael Thornton accompanied three south Vietnamese special forces soldiers on an intelligence gathering operation south of the demilitarized zone. The team was transported by junk until sunset, then paddled a rubber boar to within a mile of shore, then swam the remaining distance. At dawn, the team realized they had landed 5 miles to the north and were in North Vietnam. For the next four hours the 5-man team held off enemy forces estimated at between 200-300 strong. Norris while protecting the rear as the team made its way to the water, is shot in the back of the head. Norris later went on to be a special agent for the FBI for 20 years. #MedalofHonor #distinguisedeaglescout #Hero See more

While in high school, he played the saxophone. His passion for music carried over into his career; he helped write songs for his cartoons, including the theme for The Flintstones. Hanna became an Eagle Scout as a youth and remained active in Scouting throughout his life. The Greater Yosemite Council is proud to present Megan and Katie as our Inaugural Female Eagle Scouts. Congratulations Eagle Scout is the program’s highest rank, which only about 6% of Scouts achieve on average. To earn it, an individual has to take on leadership roles within their troop and their community; earn a minimum of 21 merit badges that cover a broad range of topics including first aid and safety, civics, business and the environment; and they must research, orga...nize and complete a large community service project. Megan Bressel, a resident of SONORA, CA completed her Eagle Project for benefit of the City of Sonora. She led a team of volunteers in July restoring a historical gold rush era cemetery. 450 headstones were scrubbed with soft bristles and water to remove a century of moss and lichen overgrowth. Katie Osterhout, a resident of WATERFORD, CA completed her Eagle Project in August benefiting Central Valley youth in foster care. She led a group of volunteers filling just over 100 backpacks with age appropriate school supplies, toys, books and personal care products. Each pack had a personal message of encouragement.

September 30, 2020 marks the end of an era at the Greater Yosemite Council. Our own Virginia Reyna has officially retired. Virginia began her career in December 1985 at the 49’er Council. She was hired by Bob Mazzuca and dedicated 35 years to the Scouts in both the 49’er and Greater Yosemite Councils. In the beginning she did registration and ran the 49’er store. Once the two councils merged, Virginia became full time registrar and assisted on various special projects including running the Stockton Cub Day Camp. Virginia’s grandson, Aaron earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Please join us in wishing Virginia a happy retirement. But do not be surprised if you pop into the council one day and see her helping old habits are hard to break. Virginia will be missed by all who knew her. Enjoy retirement!!!
