{International Student Experience at Grossmont College} Hi everyone, my name is Kanako and I graduated from Grossmont College in 2013. I completed nutritional science degree at CSULA in 2015 and currently working in LA. As an international student. I feel very grateful to start my journey at Grossmont. Not many community colleges are as welcome as Grossmont is, and Grossmont made me feel at home even though I am thousands miles away from my home. I loved international student... communities and enjoyed every international club’s events and activities. I met most of my friends through the club and memories with them at Grossmont are precious to me. Having great friends and support system around you is very important to survive in U.S. as an international student, and I appreciate that Grossmont College and its community could provide me both. I still remember the day when I came crying in the counselor’s office without appointment. Usually the counselors were all booked and having an appointment was a must to talk to them. That day I felt homesick and needed to talk to someone. I did not have anybody to talk so decided to come to the counselor’s office. I am pretty sure the counselor had an appointment with somebody else, but she patiently listened to me and encouraged me to keep going. I tended to internalize and not ask for advice/help, but it was a moment to realize that there is always someone who cares for you, and they are willing to help you when you ask for it. That was a most important lesson that I learned. It is not easy to study abroad being away from your family, so whenever you need help, the international student community and Grossmont staff will support you! Do not hesitate to ask for help! I wish all international students to have wonderful college life at Grossmont. There will be good times and tough times, but it will be all worth to experience with Grossmont family! Have fun and make the most of your opportunities while you are at Grossmont. #grossmontcollege #internationalgriffins #studentexperience

{International Student Experience at Grossmont College} Hi I am Kenta. I am from Okayama in Japan. I graduated as music major in Grossmont. My experience in GC as an international student was just amazing to be honest. I was really nervous in school at first. I did not know many people and didn’t speak English well. Then I found international club. They were very friendly and open for anybody. I met many people from the club. Even I don’t speak well they tried to understand. ...A lot of people were interested in Japan or Japanese so that helped to communicate with others. Also, there were so many people who are from Different country so it was great to learn others culture. Since i made some good friends in the club I got more comfortable to talk with new people. I can assure to new students that you might be nervous first but if you just join international club, you will make good friends for sure and I can promise they are nice and friendly. I am not this because i wanna advertise international club. I was the one didn’t have confidence to talk or speak English. I couldn’t talk with native speaker first but its ok. Eventually, you all will. So international club was really helpful and build confidence to speak for me to step up to the next level. Im not saying this club is just about stepping up but also can make many friends and really fun stuff. You can’t even imagine how much you can learn. cuz I did learn so many good things. not only skill like speaking, being sociable, and building confidence to do anything but also its really fun to hang out others and go to many great places as events. Im telling you join get your ass up and join. even one time ok. if you wanna experience many stuff, just come. This is my experience as international student. I enjoyed a lot from international club. Thank you guys Hope you will have great college life:) #grossmontcollege #internationalgriffins #studentexperience

{International Student Experience at Grossmont College} Hello, everyone. My name is Kaila Pasion and I’m an international student from the Philippines. I study Sociology and Politics as I would like to be an immigration lawyer one day and be of help to other people. My stay in Grossmont College, I can say, has made me realize that I could be more and that I have the capacity to do great things that would also benefit those around me. From my orientation to my graduation I’v...e considered Grossmont College as my third home (after my home country and San Diego of course) and there is a saying that a person’s development begins and flourishes at home. I am lucky to have three homes, of which I consider to have molded me as a better and a more intelligent person. For almost three years, I have been active on campus; working as an International Student Ambassador and being an officer for the International Club. I will forever treasure my experiences working with everyone in Grossmont College from the staff to my colleagues, not only because I have worked with such wonderful people, but most especially due to the fact that WE are all working to provide the best services and resources to the students. That, I believe is priceless as I am one of those students; and to see that there are people who actually care while I am miles away from home? That is one thing that will stick with you and minimize any sense of homesickness that international students such as myself often experience on a daily basis. In April 2019, I was awarded the International Student of the Year Award. I personally do not view it as my achievement alone, rather, it is a collective effort as I would not have done it without my professors, my co-workers, and my colleagues’ help and trust. To be recognized for something like that is not only a measure of how I am as a student and as a person; it also affirms the amount of support that everyone in Grossmont is willing to give to students like me. I will always be grateful for everything that I’ve learned throughout my stay in the college. I will never forget the people who walked in that journey with me and continue to encourage me as I pursue my dreams. I believe that having great education does not begin and end with how high your GPA is or what degree you finished, it is more than that as education and knowledge can also be acquired through your conversations and experiences with pretty much everybody you encounter in life. Thank you, Grossmont College for giving me that and more. #grossmontcollege #internationalgriffins #studentexperience

{International Student Experience at Grossmont College} Hi, My Name is Mariana Rodriguez. I used to be a student at Grossmont College, and I had the great opportunity of being part of the International Student Club. It was the best part of being in Grossmont, as I met great people and was able to create not just amazing memories but also friendships with beautiful and amazing people. My college experience was the best while I was in Grossmont. Since the college is small it ha...s a greater sense of community. {International Student Experience at Grossmont College} My name is Ekaterina. I grew up in Saint-Petersburg, Russia. I started Grossmont College 3 years ago, and it was nothing but a wonderful experience. From the friendly admissions office staff to helpful tech mall assistants who are willing to give you a piece of advice or aid in any issue that might arise; every employee has been competent and attentive, which makes the difficult and sometimes overwhelming process of navi...gating through the myriad of endless classes, stressful homework, and confusing labs smooth and enjoyable. In every step of the education process, I felt support and mentorship from the faculty as well as tutors, who are an invaluable resource when it comes to answering questions pertaining to homework and assignments. Being an active member of the pre-med club gave me an opportunity to meet like-minded people, visit Illumina (one of the most innovative leaders in the field of gene decoding), and to learn a great deal about the admission process to a medical school. As sometimes I had 14-hour days between having back-to-back classes and working as a chemistry tutor, the lively and always busy cafeteria that serves great pizzas, sandwiches, and other delicious food became the place where I can replenish my energy levels before heading back into the classroom for an evening lab. Other resources, such as career and resume writing center has been extremely helpful when I needed someone to proof-read my resume or get professional advice about the field that I am interested in. I started taking classes at Grossmont College with the goal of completing my science pre-requisites. As a non-traditional student, who has a degree under my belt, I was pleasantly surprised by the high level of education and competence of instructors. All of my professors were very accommodating and were willing to offer flexible office hours in order to help with the learning process and make sure that students have every opportunity to succeed in the class. Regular tests and homework assignments kept me motivated and prepared for the final examinations. With the knowledge that I received during those 6 semesters, especially chemistry lab practicals, I feel confident and well-qualified to apply for a position as a lab intern at any company. As I started going over the MCAT prep test, I noticed that my education at Grossmont college prepared me well for the material that might show up on the test. Well-structured curriculum for all of my science classes covered every single topic that I needed to know and gave me the necessary tools to exercise critical thinking to arrive at the correct answers when I happened to not be familiar with certain concepts. #grossmontcollege #internationalgriffins #StudentExperience
