Health May Be on the Way for Industry’s Water Challenges A large proportion of US companies may not be aware of the risks that face their businesses in terms of water challenges, according to the CDP. Just 34% of companies responding to a CDP survey in 2016 had undertaken a water assessment that included both direct operations and supply chain. But as the market for desalination and water reuse solutions heats up, companies may soon have more and better -choices for managin...g water risk. With today’s water challenges coming from a variety of areas outside of any one company’s control, it can be difficult for groups of companies to find a common solution. Individual business action will always have limited impact and most water risks can only be mitigated by the effective and concerted action of a group with common interests and concerns, says Morgan Gillespy, head of water for the CDP (via Forbes). https://www.environmentalleader.com//help-may-way-industr/

Drop by drop, businesses fill the well of unlimited water’ (GWS water treatment customers enjoy substantial water savings) The World Economic Forum’s 2015 global risk report ranks "water crises" as the top societal risk to the global economy, ahead of infectious disease, weapons of mass destruction and cross-border conflict. Megatrends are converging to create this vortex: a growing middle class with greater demand for water; a changing climate altering the availability of w...ater; and global declines in water quality, reducing the supply of clean water, increasing the treatment cost and putting people’s health and communities at risk. The problems are widespread. For example, a 2016 USA Today investigation reported that tests of nearly 2,000 water suppliers serving over 6 million people in all 50 states found excessive and harmful amounts of lead. The combination of quality issues with quantity challenges the projected 40 percent shortfall in clean water supplies by 2050 will require enormous investments in the coming years, whether for innovative water reuse and recycling technologies or the infrastructure upgrades required to safely treat and convey water to customers. https://www.greenbiz.com//drop-drop-businesses-fill-well-u

Legionnaires’ disease most often non-fatal nowadays, officials say (GWS has a solid strategy for keeping cooling towers safe) While Legionnaires’ disease sparked panic in 1976, most people who get the disease today will survive, according to health officials.... The Legionella bacteria, which causes Legionnaires’ disease and Pontiac fever, was discovered in 1976 after an outbreak among people who went to an American Legion convention in Philadelphia. A total of 34 people died, according to the New York Times. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in 2016 that about 5,000 cases of Legionnaires’ disease continue to be reported each year in the United States. The CDC also reports about one in 10 who get the disease will die from it. Nowadays, health care providers are better at detecting and treating the disease, said Janet Briscoe, epidemiology and emergency preparedness at the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department. People are getting treated sooner, she said. It’s identified sooner, so the rates of death are a lot less than what they were in the past. A Case for Reconstructing the World of Sustainable Building Standards Sustainable building certification standards are immense influencers on not only the built environment sector but also commercial, industrial and domestic green lifestyles. With that influence comes a real responsibility in establishing the current direction of travel for the industry against a backdrop of climate, economic and social change. Get it right, and we move closer to addressing major climate change issues, attaining carbon reduction targets and achieving ecologically, economically and socially just goals. Get it wrong and the negative impact ripples far beyond the built environment sector. https://www.greenbiz.com//case-reconstructing-world-sustai

Clean water: Human right, business resource (GWS is an effective partner in the Clean Water initiative) Clean water is not only a public health issue, it’s a business issue. From water that can be cost-effectively used in production or must be expensively treated, to water that enhances or imperils workers’ and customers’ health, clean water is a business resource. Sustainable business leaders understand that not only is access to clean water is a fundamental human right, it is a necessary ingredient to most businesses and the economy as a whole. https://www.greenbiz.com//3-environmental-policies-busines

Lucid Sees ‘Enormous Momentum for Sustainability Nationwide’ These results reflect a growing understanding in the private sector of the impact sustainability initiatives have not only on the environment, but on the bottom line, says Will Coleman, CEO of Lucid. The 2017 Sustainability Outlook Report: Sustainability in the Age of Trump, a survey of sustainability professionals, facilities managers, and building operators, also found that almost one-quarter (24%) of organizations have actually increased their commitment to sustainability in the face of new federal administration. https://www.energymanagertoday.com/lucid-sees-enormous-mom/

Here’s why Worker Safety is a Sustainability Essential (GWS eliminates employee exposure to toxic water treatment chemicals) When you think about sustainability, what comes to mind? Energy consumption, emissions reductions, polar bears, recycling, the triple bottom line? Most commonly it is a concept that has been associated with the environmental impacts of activities and decisions, but sustainability is about more than being green it’s also about people.... Through sustainability, organizations strive to balance the three P’s people, profit, planet to achieve longterm success and viability. Organizations of all sizes across the country and around the world have embraced sustainability as a way to showcase their values, measure impacts and outcomes and increase their competitive advantage. Organizations cannot be sustainable without protecting the safety, health and welfare of their most vital resource: workers. Thursday the WSJ printed an article on the recent CDC presentation at the EIS conference in Atlanta. The on-line article is available below through ASHRAE for a limited time and we suggest you read it and contact us with any questions. Is it surprising that chemically treated cooling towers had legionella species detected? The answer is - No! Legionella is an environmental pathogen, and in the latter half of the 20th century we humans made living environments more comfortable... to us (hot water, air conditioning) and in doing so we have invited legionella into close proximity. But proximity does not have to mean dangerous. Legionella can be controlled in well maintained cooling water systems by eliminating biofilm in building water systems. Controlling biofilm in cooling water is what we at GWS do. https://www.wsj.com//cdc-finds-bacteria-for-legionnaires-i See more
