Greenly Art Space hopes everyone's staying safe and healthy through 2021! We're still hard at work, and will be having an online opening for a new show on April 24th: the USPS Art Project. All of the art displayed in this showcase is the result of collaboration between artists who utilized the United States Postal Service for this purpose. Here, each work of art was started by one artist, who then shipped what they'd created to another artist via USPS until the work was compl...ete. The exhibition will be organized by Christina Massey, who specializes in mixed-media sculpture and painting. The exhibition will be installed at Greenly by Kimberly Hocking, Director and Curator. You will need to register for this event ahead of time, and can do so from the Greenly Art Space website (https://www.greenlyartspace.org/), or from our EventBrite page (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/usps-art-project-at-greenly-ar). The opening for this show will be on April 24th, 4:00 pm PST and held on Zoom so as to maintain safe social distancing guidelines. A video of the event will be uploaded to our YouTube Channel on the following day. We hope to see you there! This exhibition is supported in part by the Los Angeles County Department of Arts & Culture.

From my earliest experience at Greenly Art Space, I was invited, welcomed, and given support to write, draw, paint, speak, be heard, and grow. May we continue to provide that to all who enter our doors, be they physical or virtual. Happy 10 Year Anniversary, Greenly Art Space!! - Shyanne Grandi, Board Member

Art is all about change, both on the literal level (a painter applying watercolor to a blank canvas) and metaphorical (how art can change the way we see the world). Steve Marr's "At the Colorado Lagoon", currently on display at Greenly Art Space's "Second Lives: Reuse, Reclaim, Remake" exhibit, dives into the titular locale's surprising history and shows how positive change can be made. "My parents lifeguarded at the Colorado Lagoon in the 1940's. They had the politically inc...orrect name of Polio Pit and Urine Bay for the body of water. Through a citizen action committee the area has been renovated and the water quality improved. It is now a beautiful park-like setting with native plant landscaping. I can't think of a better example of reuse than this." (8"x12", Watercolor on paper, $250) "Second Lives: Reuse, Reclaim, Remake" will be open until the end of July. Visitations for this exhibit are by appointment only. Please contact Greenly Art Space to make your appointment. July's almost over, but there's still time to see the incredible work being shown at Greenly Art Space's "Second Lives: Reuse, Reclaim, Remake" exhibit. Today's social media feature is a work by Sharna Fabiano, entitled "Forever." "Forever is a repurposed canvas, a literal "second life." I first painted on it while exploring new techniques I learned from an online course. Dissatisfied with the result, I stacked it in a corner of the studio and forgot about it. Months later, ...after making a series of smaller paintings featuring patterns of circles, my gaze wandered into that same corner and I pulled out this canvas again. The circle itself is the universal symbol of regeneration and rebirth, not only in second lives, but in third, fourth, and beyond. In this many-layered composition, the circles appear to go on forever, like the effect in a hall of mirrors." (36"x36", Acrylic on Canvas, $400) "Second Lives: Reuse, Reclaim, Remake" will be open until the end of July. Visitations for this exhibit are by appointment only. Please contact Greenly Art Space to make your appointment. Through the use of found objects, old art can become the building blocks for new art. This was part of the inspiration behind Kay Hagen's "Contrast," which is one of the pieces being shown at Greenly Art Spaces "Second Lives: Reuse, Reclaim, Remake" exhibit. Kay has this to say: "I believe it is a good fit for the show because it is made all of recycled materials torn apart from other pieces. Also it has a message about our responses to climate change and our impact on the Ea...rth." (11.5"x14.5", Mixed Media on Panel, $150) "Second Lives: Reuse, Reclaim, Remake" will be open until the end of July. Visitations for this exhibit are by appointment only. Louise Ivers' photographs are able to capture the essence of some of the biggest found objects around--the industrial infrastructure of Southern California, which have a lot to say about who we are and how we live. At Greenly Art Space, we're proud to show examples of her work, like "Defunct Refinery" at our "Second Lives: Reuse, Reclaim, Remake" exhibit. Here are her words: "The three photographs I am submitting for your consideration to the exhibit, Second Lives, portray ...objects that have been discarded and are waiting to be recycled [...] The third photo, Defunct Refinery, depicts a decommissioned oil refinery that is being dismantled. All of the artifacts in these photographs are awaiting their second lives." (8.5"x11", Digital Photograph, $150) "Second Lives: Reuse, Reclaim, Remake" will be open until the end of July. Visitations for this exhibit are by appointment only. Please contact Greenly Art Space to make your appointment. Sometimes, old art becomes the basis for new art. This is the case for Sara Walsh's "Storm and Stability", which she discusses here: "This is an example of reusing, recycling and repurposing old paintings. Rather than throwing away or painting over two canvases that didn't express the feelings I was after, I tore pieces from each and recombined them into a new statement. Now, both the chaos and structure of life is apparent." (24"x18", Collage acrylic paint on canvas, $500)... "Second Lives: Reuse, Reclaim, Remake" will be open until the end of July. Visitations for this exhibit are by appointment only. Please contact Greenly Art Space to make your appointment. The "Second Lives: Reuse, Reclaim, Remake" exhibit continues to bring exposure to Southern California artists who re-imagine the world around us. Another such artist is Catheryn Franklin, whose "Scene it Before, Not Like This" offers a vivid example of how art can be transformed. "This canvas was indeed granted a second life from its beginning as an abstract painting, with no particular message, to a scene celebrating nature in an untrashed state. Snatches of abstraction play... with visual acuity." (36"x24", Acrylic on Canvas,, $475) "Second Lives: Reuse, Reclaim, Remake" will be open until the end of July. Visitations for this exhibit are by appointment only. Please contact Greenly Art Space to make your appointment. Happy Friday! We wanted to take this time to share with you another one of the amazing pieces being shown at Greenly Art Space's "Second Lives: Reuse, Reclaim, Remake" exhibit. This one is "Endangered Forest" by Sara Walsh, which carries an ecological message. "The ground of the collage is discarded EEG paper suggesting that the forests are stressed. (Seizure activity can be seen in the background.) The cut tree forms are scraps from a variety of woodcut prints." (20"x16", Co...llage: EEG paper, oil based printers ink on paper, $400.) "Second Lives: Reuse, Reclaim, Remake" will be open until the end of July. Visitations for this exhibit are by appointment only. Please contact Greenly Art Space to make your appointment.
