Dracula is the tale of a vampire (the vampire, really) that has awakened from death and into the "modern" world (the book takes place in the same period it was published, the turn of the twentieth century). The book opens with Jonathan Harker, a young notary sent by his mentor to finish a set of transactions with a reclusive count deep in eastern Europe. After arriving it becomes increasingly clear that there is something very strange with said count and by the time it is r...evealed to Jonathan just how strange he also reaches the realization that he has become a prisoner. As the Count's plans to establish a new home in London (in order to have access to the modern world) unfold, various people connected to Jonathan are drawn in. This leads to a cat and mouse game in which it isn't always clear who is hunting whom. The book takes the form of a collection of journals, correspondences, articles, and the like arranged mostly in chronological order. The various examples of writing have a fairly distinctive voice from another, and reflect much about the unique qualities of each of the characters. I first attempted to read Dracula several years ago but didn't make it past the first chapter. Jonathan Harper's journal entries were just so dry. Giving another go recently, I didn't have as much issue, although it still took some effort to get through the first section. Once night falls and the wolves come out, things pick up and Harker's meticulous prose takes on a certain charm of its own especially as things get stranger. The tension between the business-like tone and the situation which goes in an increasingly bizarre and dangerous direction helped to draw me into the story. I also found that throughout the rest of the book the approaches to style that each character's contribution exhibits complements and contrasts in interesting ways. The various subplots and sections work well as tales of their own and there are several I'm curious as to how well they would fare expanded- although the book is already a fair length and doing so would wreak havoc on the overall composition, which is still pretty solid despite a few issues. One of the main aspects of the book which has aided in its (fittingly) long life is the way that it affects and is interpreted by different cultures, times, and individuals. This is in part due to Stoker's use of strong symbols and concepts that have resonated throughout history as well as drawing on the psychology of the individual and his then current culture. It seems that no matter where or when the book is read, it feels like both a product of its time and strangely relevant.
