We rely on the support of our volunteers and donors to provide food for local individuals and families. Due to Covid restrictions, we have had to limit the number of volunteers on site, and therefore have had to rely on monetary donations more than usual. If you are able to gift us with a financial donation to help with our mission of distributing food to those in need, please click the donate button located at the top of our profile. THANK YOU! #donate #charity #nonprofit

#DYK that currently The Gleaners serves an average of 18,000 people in Kern County each month? That’s over 200,000 people fed each year with the help of our volunteers, donors and local partners. #ItStartsWithFood

We are in need of two volunteer cooks. If you or someone you know would like to volunteer two days a week at the Golden Empire Gleaners, please give us a call at 661-324-2767. Be sure to ask to speak with our warehouse manager, Jason Terronez. Thank you for your constant support of our mission in action to help alleviate hunger!

Meet Julie Hansen, our Program Assistant. Here’s what Julie had to say about her time with Gleaners: I’ve been here for 2.5 years. I’ve enjoyed working here since day one. It’s a very positive atmosphere and every day is a little different. I enjoy our mission and the community we work with. The best way for the community to support us is to donate or volunteer. We can always use help in the office or the warehouse and people who don’t qualify for a referral can volunteer for a day and get a basket with a week’s worth of food. We hold fundraisers but, of course, those have been limited this past year.

In 1985, a Bible study group was inspired to create a neighborhood food pantry from which food could be distributed to the needy by using food that was going to waste from local farms and fields. Miraculously The Gleaners organization became operational within 6 months of the group’s humble idea. Throughout its 35 year history, The Golden Empire Gleaners has fed millions of Kern County residents with over 50 million pounds of food #ItStartsWithFood #FoodPantry #nonprofit #charity

A huge thank you to everyone at Kern County Department of Child Support Services! Despite having to cancel the Kern County Cares Food and Fund Drive, the department went above and beyond to donate and support our mission. With their generosity, we can continue to serve families in need in our community during the pandemic. #ItStartsWithFood

This year has inspired generosity and kindness in our community in unique ways. We are grateful for our #volunteers and #donors for their efforts to ensure local families don't go hungry this holiday season. Together, we can make a difference. #ItStartsWithFood

Help us alleviate hunger and provide food for those in need in the Kern County community by donating this holiday season. The CARES Act allows a 100% deduction allowance for cash gifts to charities for the entire 2020 tax year, up to your adjusted gross income. The deadline for this opportunity is 12/31/2020. It is through these critical donations that we are able to continue pursuing our mission and constantly provide for our neighbors throughout the year. Follow the link http://bit.ly/3roEmau to donate. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have. Wishing you a healthy and happy new year from all of us at the Golden Empire Gleaners.

We are reminded of our founders who reflected on the goodness The Lord had brought to their lives and the debt of gratitude they felt to establish a neighborhood food pantry. To have food on the table is a #blessing and we are grateful for the #giving spirit of our great community that allows us to continue #serving those in need. #ItStartsWithFood

Hunger is an unfortunate reality for millions of Americans, and the Thanksgiving holiday is a tough time for many. According to Feeding America, over 50 million people (including 17 million children) may experience hunger in 2020 as a result of unstable employment during COVID-19. More than ever, our organization recognizes the difficult circumstances that many families may be facing during the Thanksgiving holiday, so we strongly encourage our Kern community to help us alleviate hunger for individuals in need. Please visit https://live.vcita.com/site/5d4ll6ovxtp1z5vu/make-payment to make a monetary donation. We are dedicated to ensuring that no family goes without a fulfilling Thanksgiving meal and we need all the help we can get! #ItStartsWithFood

Quality vs. Quantity? Gleaners does both! We strive to provide our clients with many varieties of the most nutritious food possible, and non-perishable foods are reliable, convenient items that we regularly use for alleviating hunger. Above are some examples that you can donate. We welcome and encourage these donations as they have a long shelf-life and can be easily prepared. With the generosity of our community, we can continue to reduce food insecurity throughout Kern County and lend a hand to our neighbors! #ItStartsWithFood

Golden Empire Gleaners 14.10.2020

According to Feeding America, approximately 1 in 6 Americans are at risk of facing hunger in the US as a result of the pandemic. Food banks across the country have distributed over 1.9 billion meals to individuals who were food insecure in the US, and in March of this year, food banks were responsible for handing out 20 percent more food than the average month! These unprecedented times have proved the immense importance of donations and volunteering to your local food bank,... as you never know who in your community could be suffering from hunger. Because of generous contributions from our community, we are able to provide fulfilling varieties of food to anyone in need. A small donation of food, money or even volunteering goes a long way, and we would greatly appreciate your contributions in helping our fellow neighbors! #ItStartsWithFood See more

In the era of quarantine and social distancing, it may seem difficult to help out in your community. One impactful way to help, no matter what's going on, is by donating food and other resources to organizations that provide them to individuals in need. If you would like to get involved, start by volunteering at a local food bank or delivering groceries to those who are unable to leave their homes. When you give, you cultivate a strong sense of community. #ItStartsWithFood

Golden Empire Gleaners 10.09.2020

According to the Food and Drug Administration, between 30 and 40 percent of food in the United States goes uneaten--that's approximately 20 pounds of food per person every month! This wasted food is the second biggest component of landfills. Not only does food waste present potential environmental problems, it results in a huge financial loss. The 30 to 40 percent of uneaten food equates to about $165 billion in food each year. In order to help reduce food waste, it is important to stay informed of the shelf life of food in your home. Checking the labels on products and knowing what they mean is an incredibly helpful step, as confusion over date labelling accounts for an estimated 20 percent of uneaten food. Food waste is an ongoing issue so it's important that we all do whatever we can to help #ItStartsWithFood

Of the many lessons children will learn throughout their adolescence, teaching them about the importance of volunteering and giving back to their community is a vital one! It can help encourage empathy, teamwork, communication, and responsibility. They may also be more likely to engage in volunteering and other acts of kindness when they reach adulthood. Helping individuals in need is our specialty, and we always encourage others to do the same--whether it is a small or ...large gesture, it's good to give back. Research shows that approximately 1 in 8 seniors are food insecure every year. We are dedicated to reducing this issue as much as we possibly can and for over 29 years our Senior Sack Program has continued to be an effective way to combat this. The Golden Empire Gleaners delivers food to all 24 different Senior Sack Program sites throughout Kern County twice a month to be distributed to registered seniors. Each "Senior Sack" offers 10-12 items including fresh fruits and veget...ables, bread, boxed staples and canned food. Our main goal has always been to help reduce hunger for individuals and families in the Kern community. Most of our clients are by referral through our partnering agencies such as the County of Kern and several local schools and churches. Please contact us if you have questions or need assistance Through our referral agencies, we have given out nutritious food to individuals from various backgrounds-- from families in need and senior citizens, to those who may be homeless or unemployed. #ItStartsWithFood
