Godwit Days Spring Migration Bird Festival 29.11.2020

This Cassin’s Sparrow has so far been the rarity highlight for Humboldt County this early-December, first discovered by Godwit Days field trip coordinator and leader, Rob Fowler on 2 December. Only the fourth record for Humboldt and the first December record for all of California! As of yesterday, 9 December the bird still continued in the Vista Point area of McKinleyville. Below is a link to one of Rob’s photos he took on 3 December. (See other photos of the bird if you clic...k on the eBird list in the link). Note the barred central tail feathers, diagnostic for Cassin’s Sparrow. Also note the scaley rufous, brown and gray back pattern, the streaky crown, postocular eye line, eye ring, and the slight buffy yellow loral area. Cassin’s Sparrow generally only breeds as close as Southeastern Arizona but Oregon and California both had a record this fall (eBird map screenshot in comments). https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/285009511
