We are pleased to publish our first newsletter! While we are all in different parts of the world, let this newsletter bring us all together with exciting updates in GLOBE ! In our first issue, we are pleased to have GLOBE alumni Ding-Yuan Chen and Zeyuan Lin sharing their academic experience at Berkeley and how GLOBE helps them flourish in the future. We have also posted a handful of updates from the center, including welcoming our first badge of GLOBE Online students in Fa...ll 2020. GLOBE is also looking for energetic students to join the peer advisors team. Link through our newsletter to find out more about the application process. As we approach the season for graduate school application and job hunting, let’s hear some tips from Zeyuan (Jacob) Lin. Jacob was a GLOBE and UC Berkeley Alumnus and currently a software engineer at Oracle. Having career connections is also essential for referrals. If you know someone, you can reach out to that person and see if he/she can help you. Just get prepared, get to know the company culture. We are happy to hear how the GLOBE benefitted students’ international e...xposure and helped them build connections for the future. Happy 15th Anniversary to GLOBE! Come and read about the development and vast expansion of the GLOBE program from Professor Anthony St. George, the Former Assistant Dean of Berkeley and Lecturer for ENGIN 187. GLOBE has grown into Berkeley Engineering’s multi-faceted international research partnership support, education, and outreach center seeking to benefit Berkeley faculty, students, the Bay Area community, and the world at large.... How is everyone’s semester going on so far? This fall, we are pleased to welcome 22 visiting students from Tongji University, National Tsing Hua University, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and Tsinghua University to participate in our Globe Online Program. https://globe.berkeley.edu/programs/globeonline/ ... Although this semester is slightly different from previous semesters due to COVID-19, we are very thrilled to welcome these students to be our first cohort of the GLOBE Online Program. They will be joining the online UC Berkeley Berkeley Engineering community and taking classes from 6 different departments including Civil & Environmental Engineering, UC Berkeley; Materials Science & Engineering Department, Berkeley Mechanical Engineering, UC Berkeley Department of Bioengineering, and Electrical Engineering & Computer Science (EECS). We are looking forward to meeting all of them in person in Spring 2021 once the pandemic gets under control! In May 2019, GLOBE launched the GLOBE Ambassador Program and took a group of 20 engineering students, some who had little to no international travel experience, on a week-long trip to the Philippines and Singapore. Students studied companies and innovation across engineering fields and engaged with the local universities, social enterprises, start-ups, large industry, governmental institutions and UC Berkeley alumni. The trip was a great success and an unforgettable experie...nce to everyone who participated. Last Thursday, we had an online reunion with our GLOBE ambassadors. It was so great to see them again, particularly knowing that they are still so amazing and awesome. The reunion was a blast. We hope to see them again soon! Thanks to all the ambassadors for staying connected with GLOBE! A special thank you to all the organizations and institutions that we have visited in the Philippines and Singapore, particularly we would like to thank DOST-Philippines, HRDD of CHED-CO.ph, and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore for assisting organizing the trip. P.S. The GLOBE Ambassador program was temporarily suspended in 2020, due to COVID-19. We are hoping to resume the endeavor and embark on another journey with our next cohort of ambassadors soon! GLOBE is pleased to announce that we are partnering with Howard University to launch a new #diversity and #inclusion program called GLOBE Include this fall. In light of COVID-19, all engineering undergrad courses will be offered primarily online, Berkeley Engineering saw this as an opportunity to engage with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) and provide free specialized engineering education online and engage these s...tudents in the UC Berkeley experience. We are very excited to have Howard University as our first partner in the GLOBE Include program. We would like to give a special shout-out to Prof. Massimiliano Fratoni from Nuclear Engineering, Prof. Grace O'Connell from Mechanical Engineering, and Dr. Matt Sherburne from Materials Science and Engineering, for leading the effort and making this happen.
