At the onset of 1916, an unprecedented snowstorm struck northern California. On the 1st of January, snow was reported from Fresno to San Francisco to Sacramento and here in Willows, California. In the Sierra, the blizzard raged on for 48 hours dropping five feet of snow in downtown Truckee and 13 inches in Reno.

Many Almond farmers transformed their irrigation practices during the drought. And many more will be making similar changes on their orchards in the years leading up to 2025, as the almond industry strives to reduce the amount of water used to grow a pound of almonds by an additional 20 percent.
