TGHS Presents: Master Architects of Southern California 1920 - 1940: Paul R. Williams Thursday, April 15 @ 7PM (Virtual Event) This event is complimentary but advance RSVP required. Zoom link will be sent a few days prior to the event.... Click on the link below to RSVP: https://glendalehistorical.org/master-architects Join us as writer, historian, and television producer Stephen Gee discusses the work and innovation of celebrated Los Angeles architect Paul Revere Williams, FAIA. During his presentation, the author of Master Architects of Southern California 1920-1940: Paul R. Williams (Tailwater Press/Angel City Press, 2021) will focus on the improbable career of the pioneering architect, the first African American member of the American Institute of Architects and the organization’s first African American Fellow and Gold Medalist. In his six-decade career, Williams worked on more than 3,000 projects ranging from modest affordable housing to mansions for Hollywood celebrities. He also earned plaudits for his commercial and civic work, including the luxurious department store Saks Fifth Avenue (with John and Donald B. Parkinson, 1937) and the Music Corporation of America building (1940), both in Beverly Hills. The Master Architects of Southern California 1920-1940 series showcases the work of 12 architects featured in early issues of Architectural Digest. Williams is the fourth architect in the series, which includes Gordon B. Kaufmann, FAIA, Roland E. Coate, FAIA, and Wallace Neff, FAIA. Stephen Gee is a writer and television producer based in Los Angeles. He is the author of Iconic Vision: John Parkinson, Architect of Los Angeles (2013), and co-author, with Arnold Schwartzman, of Los Angeles Central Library: A History of its Art and Architecture (2016). Most recently Stephen authored Los Angeles City Hall: An American Icon (2018). #theglendalehistoricalsociety #tghs #masterarchitect #paulrwilliams #paulrwilliamsarchitect #paulwilliams #preservation #historicpreservation #historichomes #chooseglendale #southerncalifornia #californiaarchitecture #losangeles #glendalecalifornia #glendale #pasadena #southerncaliforniahistory

TGHS Presents: Treasures of Adams Hill with Arlene Vidor October 8 @ 7PM The Glendale Historical Society Presents Treasures of Adams Hill, a pictorial look at Glendale’s Adams Hill neighborhood past and present. Formerly part of Tropico, a mythologized city that existed for only seven years, Adams Hill evolved into Glendale’s most bohemian and architecturally distinctive neighborhood with an eclectic mix of homes piled up on the hills, many apartment buildings and a quain...t business district that includes a historic gas station repurposed as an art space. To this day, Adams Hill marches to its own tune and has a decidedly urban feel with the charm and friendly vibe of a small town. Arlene Vidor is a Glendale Arts & Culture Commissioner and previously served two terms on the Historic Preservation Commission. She was President of TGHS from 2002 to 2008, during which time the organization played a key role in the development and adoption of Glendale’s Historic District Ordinance. Arlene is also on the Adams Hill Neighborhood Association Board. She received TGHS’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017 and is a member of the Advisory Council. This is a complimentary event. GOOD NEWS: HISTORIC SUNDOWN TOWN RESOLUTION PASSED BY GLENDALE CITY COUNCIL This summer, the YWCA Glendale, Black in Glendale and a group of committed community members formed the Coalition for an Anti-Racist Glendale to lead the community forward following national incidents of police brutality, laying the groundwork for systemic change to address racial inequities in Glendale. A critical starting point for this work was a formal resolution to acknowledge and apologize for Glendale’s documented history as a sundown town. On September 15th, the Glendale City Council unanimously voted to pass the Sundown Town Resolution, making it the third city in the country to take this courageous step of reckoning with its past to move toward a more equitable future. Check out this beauty! Recently restored 1955 mid century modern home located in the Adams Hill neighborhood of South Glendale. It’s one of two twin houses built next door to each other that are almost identical, and designed by architect Rognvaldur Johnsen. Not much is known about Johnsen, though his name is Icelandic/Norwegian, and an older neighbor says that he had worked in the Eames Office. Both structures are of post-and-beam construction, with window walls and full l...ength terraces across their fronts, taking advantage of the views across the valley. A distinctive feature of this home is the spider-leg supports projecting from the roofline and touching down to the terrace structure. #theglendalehistoricalsociety #tghs #midcenturymodernhome #midcenturyhome #midcentury #midcenturyarchitecture #historicpreservation #historichomes #adamshill #glendalecalifornia #glendaleca #glendale #chooseglendale #preservation #losangeles #southerncalifornia #modernmonday

Flagged as historic in the 2007 Glendale survey of Craftsman architecture, this 1911 residence at N. Kenwood Street and California is a beautiful example of a home "transitioning from the Victorian-era into the Craftsman-era in design and materials. This sub-style was generally constructed during the 1900s to the early 1910s when there were holdover elements of nineteenth century design. This style is not commonly found in Glendale, unlike other Southern California cities suc...h as Pomona where it was popular. Typically, the Transitional still retains a strong vertical emphasis on the façade, and Victorian-era design elements such as bay windows, long narrow windows and decorative knee brackets and rafters. What generally differentiates this type of residence from a Victorian-era residence is its Craftsman features such as stonework on porch pedestals, horizontally-oriented windows surrounded by wide casings, sometimes a hipped roof with a squat dormer at the façade side of the roof, and rafter tails under the roof line." from the City of Glendale Reconnaissance Survey and Historic Context Statement Of Craftsman Style Architecture, 2006-2007 See more
