It’s our GIV Wine Spotlight by Winemaker, David Shattuck 2018 Grand Island Vineyards Petite Sirah... We are excited to bring out our next vintage of one of the best delta classic red wines: The 2018 Grand Island Vineyards Petite Sirah. This vintage of Petite Sirah is notable from the very long skin contact during fermentation. Petite Sirah is a richly pigmented and tannic red grape that normally does not lend itself well to heavy extraction. However, this vintage had nearly perfect ratios of skin tannin, seed tannin, and color, which allowed us to give the wine a long extraction period. The result is a dense wine with more earth and floral flavors in addition to the classic ripe fruit of Petite Sirah. This elegant Petite Sirah can be served alongside smoky BBQ, with a nice steak, or alongside some Parmigiano-Reggiano. This wine pours an intense purple color that coats the glass. The initial aromas are of pluot, lavender, and cacao. As the wine opens with a few swirls the bouquet begins to evolve with fleeting wisps of vanilla, smoky oak, loam, and dried cherry bringing nuance to this wine. GRAND ISLAND VINEYARDS - MEET THE SALMAN and GIV FAMILY The Salman family has been growing wine grapes for over 45 years! Located directly off the levee road of State Highway 160, the Salman family has developed over 450 acres of vineyards with more than a dozen varieties planted including Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Fiano, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Symphony, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot. Among the vast acreage of win...e grapes, there are also two pear orchards, adding to the beautiful landscape that is Grand Island Vineyards. Beginning in the 1920’s, Mujiko Salman immigrated from what is now Croatia, and began growing tomatoes and asparagus along the fertile river Delta. Enver Salman, Mujiko’s son, first planted wine grapes in 1969, including French Colombard and Petite Sirah and remains an integral part of daily operations while wife Cynthia oversees administration of the Winery and Salman Farms. Joe Salman, the youngest son of three children who grew up on the ranch came home to join the effort after graduating from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo with a degree in BioResource and Agricultural Engineering and has managed the development of the winery and also manages winery operations. Before envisioning a family winery, the Salman’s had great success with wine buyers such as E. & J. Gallo and Simi Winery in Sonoma County, Pine Ridge Vineyards and Beaulieau Vineyard in Napa Valley, Jeff Runquist Wines in Amador County, and nearby Lodi and Clarksburg wineries including Bogle Vineyards. It’s our exciting GIV Vineyard News and update about HARVEST from our very own GIV Owner and Operations Manager Joe Salman!! As promised, grapes are now being harvested! Things started a bit early back on August 7th with Gewurztraminer. While that pick wasn't for our winery, we held some back to get the fruit a bit riper and harvested our own Gewurztraminer later in August. I know a lot of you really like the Gewurztraminer, so keep posted in the winemaker areas below for... more on this throwback wine. Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris were the next varieties to come off during some very warm nights. In late August we harvested our home ranch reserve Pinot Noir for our winery which is always exciting (well, it is if you are a fan of the Salman Family Reserve Pinot Noir). Not only did we bring in Pinot, but we also brought in Merlot (oops, I mean Block 2).
