Hi Everyone, it's been way too long!!! I wanted to let you all know what's been going on with Girlfriends in the last couple of years. As you all can imagine starting a non-profit group during a recession is tough, to say the least. The easiest part was getting girls to attend weekly meetings. My average group size was 30 girls per school, per day which was awesome! The hard part was raising much needed funds to keep Girlfriends going. Because of the lack of funding as w...ell the needs of my family I had to start working again. BUT never fear Girlfriends will be back I promise! I want you to know that I still keep in touch with the girls, who are now growing into beautiful accomplished young women! I am still (and always will be) available as a mentor and friend for each and every Girlfriend! Here are a few individual updates: Amarilis is attending LBCC, she's working on her BA and will be transferring to Long Beach State. She has a 2 year old daughter, and she is an amazing mom. Amber is attending college in Indiana, she is working on getting her degree. She is a hard working go getter! Rykiah is one busy girl. She won Miss Teen California 2015, and will be running for Miss Teen United States at the end of the year. We wish her luck, and know she will be amazing! Beverly graduated from Long Beach State with her degree in Nutrition. I'm so proud of Beverly, she's an amazing person inside and out. I just love this kid! Marlene graduated from Long Beach State with her degree in Business. Congrats...you deserve so much an you will get it!! I will do my best to continue making updates on all the Girlfriends and the future of the group. All the best! Kristi

Girlfriends is a mentor group for teen girls in the city of Long Beach and Lakewood. It provides a place to learn and grow in a nurturing and positive environment. Girls are extremely impressionable during their teen years and we try to offer each girl an opportunity to mature into happy, healthy, ambitious adults. This is achieved through activities such as how to stay safe in different environments, how to set and achieve important goals, or how to love and accept ourselves. The bottom line is that these girls are gaining essential life skills while forming lifelong relationships. Hopefully, each member can look back on Girlfriends as a profound life changing experience that has helped shape the women they’ve become.

Welcome to Girlfriends! My name is Kristi Heicke, and I’m the founder of Girlfriends in Long Beach, California. Whether you’re a young girl between the ages of 11 and 15 or a parent searching for wholesome resources you can trust and your daughter can rely on, you’ve come to the right place. You see, I started Girlfriends two years ago when I realized the importance of positive role models and mentors in a young girl’s life. I have two daughters of my own and knew early on th...at I wanted to give them every opportunity to grow and mature into happy, healthy, ambitious adults. And that’s what Girlfriends is all about. We gather together once a week to talk about what’s going on in our lives, problems we run into, and work through positive solutions. Sometimes we go on field trips or dive into creative activities as we learn about community service, how to handle money, how to stay safe, how to set and achieve important goals, or how to love and accept ourselves. Whatever we do, we do have a great time laughing, talking, and getting to know one another. The bottom line is that we are gaining essential life skills while forming lifelong relationships.
