Teachers are so important. Growing up, a lot of my teachers ended up being a part of my extended family and were instrumental in helping me establish my values... and discover what I am passionate about. That was my violin teacher Joseph for me...WW2 vet, tough as nails but heart of gold. It’s surreal to think about how ever since I was 7, he literally spent hundreds of hours transferring his wisdom and skills to me and now here I am using everything he taught me to compose my own music for others to listen to. When we first met, he didn’t even speak English! We had a lot of difficulty understanding each other because he would only be able to move my hands and give me directions in Russian. He saw how frustrated I was becoming being unable to communicate so one day he showed up to the lesson with a little English translation tool! He would type in phrases and read them out to me, and pretty soon we were even making jokes to each other. I even picked up some Russian. Anyway, today is Joseph’s ceremony and I wish I could be there. I keep thinking about how part of the whole reason I have my abilities and am able to make music for a living is because of someone else committing their time and having faith in my potential.
