A vigil celebrating the life of Sheria Musyoka, the only fatality in an 8 car accident that took place near Higuera Avenue and Lake Merced Boulevard. You couldn’t be around Sheria for longer than a few moments without being impacted by him, Musyoka’s wife, Hannah Ege, said while remembering her husband of a year and a half. His smile was welcoming and he often lightened the mood with his jokes and infectious laugh. #sfstate #sfsu #lakemerced #caraccident @almansur510...@shortlittlekidd & @jun.__.ueda Link to the story on our bio! With the alarming number of anti-Asian hate crimes since the beginning of the pandemic, violence on elder Asian Americans is on rise.My first reaction is that it is heartbreaking, gut-wrenching that our Asian elders are experiencing violence, on top of, you know, experiencing high death rates due to COVID, said Cynthia Choi, co-executive director of Chinese for Affirmative Action, a non-profit organization founded in 1969 to protect the civil and political rights of Chinese Americans.Under usual circumstances, friends and families would reunite for Lunar New Year, wish each other good health, fortune and luck and exchange gifts, but unprecedented times call for unprecedented measures.#sfstate #sfsu #asianamericans #crimes Sabita Shrestha Sabita Shrestha Link in our bio

It’s been less than 24 hours since President Joe Biden took office, but plenty has already been done and even more is yet to come. Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have taken the White House in the middle of a pandemic responsible for the death of over 400,000 people in the nation, economic downfall, and two weeks following a Capitol riot provoked by GOP senators and now-former President Donald Trump, which has lead him to his second, and ongoing, impeachment process.... Xpress introduces First 100, an ongoing project that will break down and explain key dates, decisions and events occurring throughout the first 100 days of the Biden administration, and how they may relate to the SF State campus community. The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict on Campus: Palestinian Student Experiences Hundreds of people walked past or under the mural portraying Edward Said while heading to class or entering the bookstore. A second-year Palestinian student recalled looking at the Edward Said Mural almost everyday while walking around the SF State campus. They remembered the contemplative gaze of the Palestinian academic portrayed in front of a background weaving a depiction of SF State’s Malcolm X p...laza with iconic landmarks from New York City, Jerusalem and San Francisco. Two cloud-like doves stand out in the bright blue sky, their intertwined figures spelling the word for peace in Arabic. Something that brings me a lot of joy as a Palestinian on campus is the mural, the student said, speaking on the condition of anonymity. Every time I see it, it just makes me happy that there’s something that’s a part of us that is visible on campus. The mural, which celebrates Palestinian heritage and commemorates the late writer, academic and human rights activist Said, was completed in 2007 after almost three years of objections, leading to an eventual redesign. It joined multiple murals on campus that display students’ backgrounds and leaders such as Malcolm X and Cesar Chavez, illustrating the history and efforts of various social justice movements. The reason I chose SF State was more about, ‘I like it here’ and ‘I like that there’s like the one and only [General Union of Palestine Students] that’s left here,’ said another Palestinian student who spoke on the condition on anonymity. I like that there’s a Palestinian mural. It kind of just makes it feel like I’m meant to be here. Nothing could have prepared longtime English professor Jolie Goorjian for the first day of the fall semester. I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I don’t know what I’m doing I shouldn’t be doing this,’ the 20-year teacher recalled telling herself in her dining room on Zoom. This is a whole different game. The class turned out fine. But she had come prepared. In recent years, Goorjian has attended the vast majority of teaching classes, lunch-and-learns, online courses and programs... hosted by SF State’s teacher development center, the Center for Equity and Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CEETL), which compensates teachers upon completion. Now, with CEETL’s support, she and Public Health professor Juliana Van Olphen are ready to launch their own online course. On Jan. 4, 2021, CEETL will release the 25-hour course Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Writing, Pedagogies for Inclusive Excellence institute (JEDI Writing PIE) to assist faculty of writing-intensive classes in striking a balance when focusing both on writing and on content in their courses. It pays special attention to the detail that many faculty aren’t prepared to teach writing. SF State English Professor, KQED Forum host Michael Krasny announces retirement Blackies Pasture overlooks downtown San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge and the Oakland Bay Bridge. This is where Michael Krasny has spent part of his time since the start of the pandemic. His stride is short, but his pace is quick as he walks the pasture to get in his 3-4 mile walk for the day. Although he does not want to retire and has the energy to keep going, he said that he feels this i...s the time to hang up the headphones and enjoy the view. I used to think they’d have to take me out in a casket But you get to the point where you slow down. Especially if you have a grandchild, for me it’s life transforming, Krasny said. A week after carving out an exemption for cannabis, San Francisco appeared ready to ban smoking within apartment buildings, but resident complaints influenced the Board of Supervisors to reverse its decision on Tuesday. The officials voted 10-1 in favor of the restrictions a week ago, but the procedural second vote a formality that rarely alters decisions resulted in a 6-5 setback on the legislation. Opposing the reversal were Supervisors Norman Yee, Sandra Lee Fewer, Raf...ael Mandelman, Catherine Stefani and Ahsha Safaí. With a second change of heart, District 10 Supervisor Aaron Peskin led the reversal to send the legislation back to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee, saying that residents in his district swayed his vote. He said most were elderly, long-term tenants with rent-control who worried about fines for their behavior despite no history of complaints from adjoining tenants.
