"L.A. Graffiti Black Book" is out TODAY! This book is a groundbreaking collaboration of 151 graffiti and tattoo artists from Los Angeles, who demonstrate a wide breadth of styles and an unparalleled mastery of lettering, calligraphy, and illustration. The idea for the book took root nearly ten years ago, when rare books curator David Brafman brought these artists together to peruse rare books of calligraphy and lettering at the Getty Research Institute. They immediately... spotted the 'liber amicorum', a 15th century autograph book passed around among friends and colleagues, generally within academic and aristocratic circles. The artists ended up making their own liber amicorum, one that commemorated the craft and distinct style of L.A. graffiti art. Housed at the Getty Research Institute, it was known as the Getty Black Book. Now, in 2021, it is being reissued and is available to the wider public. Happy Birthday Marcia Tucker! TODAY ONLY we're offering 20% off 'Out of Bounds: The Collected Writings of Marcia Tucker' in celebration of the groundbreaking founder of the New Museum. It’s no secret that Marcia Tucker, the late founder of New York’s New Museum, was brilliant, so it’s no surprise that 'Out of Bounds' is extraordinary. Artnews... At a time when there is renewed interest in the role of the museum, the critic, and the artistic activist, Tucker’s writing offers a much needed push to radical change. Hyperallergic What we need is arts leaders like Tucker who recognise that the paradigm of equality, ‘can’t just be a matter of programming but has to be somehow inscribed in the heart of an organization’ (p.198). Otherwise the status quo will remain exactly where it is. Burlington Contemporary Learn more and get your copy here: https://bit.ly/3dqwkHV

Earlier this week the Getty Museum announced the acquisition of 39 Dutch drawings, including "Metamorphosis of a Small Emperor Moth on a Damson Plum", a meticulously executed watercolor by Maria Sibylla Merian, created around 1679. Merian was one of the first to portray the appearance of insects from egg to maturity in relation to their food sources. Her artful depictions are so accurate that in most cases it is possible to identify individual species, making her a pioneer in the fields of entomology and ecology. Learn more about #Merian, her adventures and her work, in our book 'Maria Sibylla Merian: Artist, Scientist, Adventurer' -- written for middle-grade readers but a great introduction for all ages!

New on Art + Ideas "The idea of a kind of intact tomb, at a certain moment where the archaeologist breaks through the door and lifts up a lamp to reveal the glint of gold everywhere. That’s become the defining moment for archaeology." What do we know about the people who explored and studied Egypt’s ancient civilizations? The notebooks of well-known figures such as Howard Carter, who unearthed King Tut’s tomb in 1919 and created stunning, detailed renderings of it, reve...al how Europeans have tried for centuries to unravel the mysteries of Egypt’s ancient languages, cultures, rituals, and monuments. The history of the exploration of Egypt tells not only of our drive to understand the ancient world, but also the political machinations and contests that motivated such exploration. Chris Naunton - Egyptologist's new book, 'Egyptologists’ Notebooks: The Golden Age of Nile Exploration in Words, Pictures, Plans, and Letters', uses the often-beautiful records of early explorers and archaeologists from the 17th through 20th centuries to give insight into their discoveries. In this episode, Naunton discusses some of the key figures in Egyptology, highlighting their contributions to the field and to our contemporary understanding of ancient Egypt.
