Just acquired these four classic in large illustrated and annotated editions from W. W. Norton & Co. Each is protected in a mylar jacket cover, and each includes numerous illustrations from various past editions, practically on every other page. And you can’t have them because I’ve decided to keep them for myself. Oh wait I’ve just been told I can’t do that.

...nobody makes that much money without taking advantage of somebody. It's much easier to make money if you don't care who you hurt. If you have scruples, it's much harder to get rich. Shari Lapena, The Couple Next Door

Many from the mystery genre coming in, including a few from one of its legends: I never take ideas from the headlines. I feel that if a story is good enough, a real story that is, then it's already been covered by the media, and if it's not good enough, why would I want to bother with it? -Ed McBain

European folklore’s witty and subversive anti-hero, originally published as a story in the fifteenth century by William Caxton, retold here by English author and historian, Anne Louise Avery. Available overseas for months, it’s finally available again stateside (and here in the shop!). Also, if your day needs a bit of folktale to keep it going, her Twitter page is a treat.

A glimpse into the lives of native peoples from the ice age on, through the animals present during each era, tribal diets and ceremony, art and community- for young readers. A used copy just came our way last week-

The original volume of Peter Matthiessen’s fictional account of Florida sugar cane outlaw Edgar Bloody Watson was long enough that the publisher demanded it be released in three volumes. The author was never satisfied with the results, and over a number of years set about refining the original manuscript into a more compressed and cohesive single volume. When it was finally published in 2008, it was the winner of the National Book Award, making Peter Matthiessen the only author to receive the award in both nonfiction and fiction. We recently took in a copy here in a Modern Library edition.
