Christina Seely’s project terra systema is a series of large-scale photographic works which are made up from two layered prints which create an awareness of motion of the rainforest and water melt from areas where she is witness to the effects of climate change. The photographs are made using long exposures. One set of images, respiro (breath) depict the living respiratory system of the rainforest belt. In the set of flumen (current) images the artist explores the kinetic life of melt water from the Greenland ice sheet, where she travelled over the course of two summers with a group of scientists. To see and read more about Seely’s work which engages with climate change visit her website at christinaseely.com

Happy Earth Day! One of the most important resources our special planet has to offer is water, but in droughts and Mediterranean climates like ours, it can be hard to come by. Learn how the water wise native plants of California have specially adapted to water scarcity with a new scavenger hunt now on our website’s Garden Detectives page. This desert mallow (Sphaeralcea ambigua) in our Native Plant Pollinator Garden has many water wise adaptations: fuzzy leaves, a narrow and small leaf shape, and a deep taproot. What other adaptations will you find in your scavenger hunt investigation? #earthday2021 #gatewaysciencemuseumchico #gatewaysciencemuseum #gatewayfromhome #museumsfromhome #gatewaygardendetectives #waterwisegardening #droughttolerant

Last week we learned how to turn pinecones into bird feeders for our yards. This week, we’re identifying them! What do pinecones from different pine trees look like? What is their function? What are the scales and prickles for? This week’s Garden Detectives activity (now on our website) is a guide to pinecone anatomy and to the wide diversity of California pine species and their cones. How many will you recognize, or identify on your next hike? The developing cone show...n here is from a bristlecone pine (Pinus longaeva), which is one of the longest living organisms on the planet. Many of these trees, which grow high in the eastern mountain ranges of central California, live to be over 4,000 years old! #gatewaysciencemuseum #gatewaygardendetectives #gatewayfromhome #museumsfromhome See more

A windy day like today is a great day for learning about weather instruments! Many shifts in weather happen as seasons change, and meteorologists use these instruments to measure temperature, rainfall, wind speeds, and other weather variables. In this week’s Garden Detectives activity on our website, learn to build your own anemometer to capture and measure the wind in your own yard using materials at home! This anemometer is used to research weather patterns in the Department of Meteorology at Penn State. What will you learn from the one you make at home? #gatewaysciencemuseumchico #gatewayfromhome #museumsfromhome #gatewaygardendetectives #meteorology
